BATON ROUGE, La. Junior Stephanie Derrey shot a season-best round of even-par 72 to lead the NC State women’s golf team during the second day of the NCAA Women’s East Regional at the par-72, 6,403-yard University Club.
Making its sixth consecutive NCAA appearance, NC State began its morning round bright and early at 8 am from hole No. 10.
Derrey improved by six shots from her opening round with an even-par 72 today. The Paris, France native played very stead all day. After giving back a stroke on her opening hole, she bounced right back with a birdie at the par-5 11th. The only other blemish on the back nine was a bogey at the tough par-4 18th.
Derrey moved back to even with another birdie at the par-5 6th hole and went to one-under with a birdie at the par-5 6th. However, a bogey on the No. 9 finishing hole left her at even par for the day and +6 (78-72=150) through 36 holes in a tie for 70th.
Sophomore Lauren Doughtie fell back after an opening-round 71 with a four-over 76 today. After making the turn at +3 and then giving back two more strokes with a double at the par-4 2nd hole, Doughtie got her game rolling with back-to-back birdies at No. 3 and 4 to get to +3. Only a bogey at the par-5 6th hole set her back as she finished up her round with three pars and a one-over 37 on her front nine. The Suffolk, Va., native is at +3 (71-76=147) overall in a tie for 47th.
Freshman Emily Street fired her second straight four-over 76 and is at +8 (76-76=152) overall in a tie for 79th. The bright spot of the day was a birdie at the par-3 5th hole to get to +4 and held on with four straight pars to finish up her day. Prior to that, Street had five straight pars from holes 11-15 and scattered five bogeys on her round before her birdie on No. 5.
Freshman Joanna Saleeby, who fired a career-best round of five-over 77 yesterday, finished two shots off that pace with a second round seven-over 79 and sits in a tie for 92nd at +12 (77-79=156) overall.
On her round today, Saleeby struggled with a 42 on the back nine, but shot an one-over 37 on the front nine. The Raleigh native had two birdies and eight pars today, including five in a row from holes 1-5. After a birdie at the par-5 6th to get to +5, she bogeyed both the par-4 7th and 9th holes.
Freshman Kathleen Strandberg followed up yesterday’s first-round 78 with a seven-over 79 on Friday morning and is tied for 98th at +13 (78-79=157) overall. Strandberg had a hard time getting things going today with two bogeys and a double bogey on the back nine and three more bogeys on the front nine. Sprinkled in between were 12 pars with her best stretch of four straight on holes 5-8.
The Wolfpack shot a second round team total of +15 (303) and is at +29 (302-303=605) overall in 18th place among 21 competing teams.
UCLA leads a field of 21 teams at -12 (281-283=564), followed by Wake Forest at -8 (284-284=568) and Duke at -4 (291-281=572).
UCLA’s Sydnee Michaels leads the individual standings at -10 (66-68=134), followed by Wake Forest’s Nannette Hill at -8 (66-70=136) and Louisville’s Cindy LaCrosse at -7 (69-68=137).
Final round action continues all day on Saturday with NC State beginning at 12:30 pm Central time.
