CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Shanna Smith went 3-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI, and Abbie Sims held Boston College to a paltry two hits for her sixth shutout of the year as NC State completed its sweep of the Eagles, 4-0, on Sunday, April 8. The win moves the Pack to 27-16 (7-5 ACC) on the season, while BC falls to 7-14 (2-7 ACC). Sims (17-5) collected the win, while Britney Thompson (4-7) took the loss.
Sims fanned five batters throughout the game, pushing her career total to 998. With just two more k’s she will become only the fifth hurler in ACC history to record at least 1,000 strikeouts.
The game, which was played at Harvard University, featured bone chilling winds and temperatures in the high 20’s / low 30’s. According to head coach Lisa Navas, the team didn’t succumb to the harsh temperatures.
“I thought we played well today,” said Navas. “Especially dealing with the elements.”
The Pack used three hits to get on board in the top of the second. Smith pushed a base hit through the left side, and then scored when Miranda Ervin doubled to center and advanced to third on the relay throw. Kristine Bechtholdt later singled to right, bringing Ervin across the plate for a 2-0 lead.
State grabbed another run when Allison Presnell and Smith hit back-to-back doubles to left, with Presnell scoring on Smith’s line drive, in the top of the fourth.
BC threatened in the bottom of the fourth, but failed to do any damage. Jenna Macchi reached on a fielder’s choice and Thompson doubled down the right field line, pushing Macchi to third. Ashley Obrest then walked to load the bases for the Eagles with two outs, but Sims fanned Taylor Peyton to end any scoring threat.
The Pack collected its fourth run in the top of the sixth. Smith sent a two-out double, her second of the game, up the middle. Ervin then followed by lining a single into left, allowing Smith to trot in.
“We had solid offensive production from everyone throughout the lineup across the entire weekend,” said Navas. “The team seems to be coming together at a critical time for us.”
NC State will play three series in the coming week, wrapping things up with a home ACC stint. The Pack will host Charlotte for two games on Tuesday, April 10, before traveling to UNC Greensboro for two more contests on Thursday, April 12. NC State will end the week by hosting Virginia for three games, two on Saturday, April 14, before the finale on Sunday, April 15.
