CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Atlantic Coast Conference has a new all-time career leader in home runs. Wolfpack slugger Jen Chamberlin crushed her 47th career shot during NC State’s 11-2 rout of Boston College on Saturday, April 7, in the second of two games in Chestnut Hill, Mass. With the win, the Pack moves to 26-16 (6-5 ACC), while the Eagles fall to 6-14 (2-6 ACC).
“I’m really happy for Jen,” said head coach Lisa Navas. “She has done a great job for us at hitting the ball during her entire career at NC State. I told her that I was happy to see her break the record, but I want to see her hit a few more this season."
"It's a great feeling," said Chamberlin of breaking the record. "It's something that I've wanted for a long time."
State belted a school-record six home runs throughout the course of the game, as well as a season-high 13 hits.
“We seem to have really come together as a team today," said Navas. “I’m really proud of the way that the team hit the ball.”
Hurler Shaina Ervin (8-10) tossed the win for the Wolfpack, striking out 11 batters and allowing just four hits. Taylor Peyton (1-6) took the loss for the Eagles.
State struck first in the top of the third. Heather Gelbard drew her second walk of the game and was replaced by Krystal Hawkins on the basepath. Blair Harkey then moved Hawkins to second with a groundout. Chamberlin followed with an RBI single to left, scoring Hawkins from second, but was thrown out trying to stretch her base hit into a double.
Megan Dalthorp lengthened the Pack’s lead with a two-run blast, the second of her career, to left field in the top of the fourth, putting State up 3-0.
Boston College threatened in the bottom of the fourth, but failed to put any runs on the scoreboard. Jenna Macchi singled to center, and then took second when Harkey bobbled the recovery. Ervin then walked Britney Thompson, before fanning Ashley Oberst and Peyton. Amy Tunstall followed with a walk to load the bases for the Eagles with two outs, but Ervin caught Katrina Vasquez looking to end the inning.
NC State blew the game wide open in the top of the fifth, grabbing four runs on four hits, three of which were home runs. Gelbard moved the score to 4-0 by jacking the first pitch of the inning out of the park in right-center. With that, BC put Amanda Klimczak in the circle, removing Vasquez from the game and putting Peyton at third.
Two at-bats later Chamberlin took the reigns of the ACC career home run record, demolishing a Klimczak pitch over the wall in left field for her 47th home run.
Abbie Sims followed Chamberlin’s feat with a walk, and then Allison Presnell cleared the bases with a two-run dinger to right, moving the lead to 7-0.
Tunstall took Ervin yard with a two-run shot to left in the bottom of the sixth, putting Boston College on the board.
The Pack moved the score to 11-2 in the top of the seventh as Jennifer Patterson and Gelbard both crushed two-run homers to dead center.
NC State and Boston College will wrap up the series tomorrow, Sunday, April 8, with game three at 1 p.m. The contest will be played on the campus of Harvard University.
