RALEIGH, N.C. NC State took care of No. 22 North Carolina, 5-0, in the second of two games at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex on Saturday, April 21. Shaina Ervin (13-10) tossed a one-hit gem, fanning seven batters and walking two, while Danielle Spaulding (5-1) took the loss. With the win, the Pack moves to 38-16 (12-5 ACC), while the Tar Heels fall to 41-14 (10-6 ACC). The victory also extends the Pack's school-record win streak to 14-straight.
Jen Chamberlin and Allison Presnell led the Pack at the plate, going 3-for-3 and 2-for-3 respectively.
State has now won the last eight meetings between the two programs.
The Pack got things rolling in the bottom of the first, putting up three runs on two hits. Blair Harkey reached on a fielder’s choice and then moved to third on a double to center from Chamberlin. Presnell followed with a two RBI triple into left field. A sac-fly to deep center from Shanna Smith allowed Presnell to trot in, moving the lead to 3-0.
Heather Gelbard moved the score to 4-0 with a leadoff shot to center in the bottom of the third. Harkey followed with a chop single to short. With that, North Carolina head coach Donna Papa pulled a double-switch, sending Amber Johnson to the circle and putting Whitney Gelin behind the plate.
Kristine Bechtholdt added another run for the Pack with her first career homer, a solo shot to right, in the bottom of the sixth.
NC State and North Carolina will wrap up the pivotal league stand at 12 p.m. tomorrow, Sunday, April 22. Live stats will be available on GoPack.com.
All nine of the Pack’s departing seniors will be recognized before first pitch on Sunday, as well as the North Carolina seniors.
