No. 37 W. Tennis Drops Close Match at ACC Championship

No. 37 NC State women's tennis fell in a close match to No. 47 Virginia in the first round of the ACC Championships on Thursday morning in Cary, N.C. The Wolfpack won the doubles point against the Cavs, including the clinching win by the No. 24 doubles team of Alejandra Guerra and Daria Petrovic, but lost four of the five completed singles matches.
"Are girls came out strong today as they have all season in doubles," head coach Hans Olsen said. "We've played great doubles the last few matches against tough competition and I was pleased to see how they responded by taking the double point against the Cavaliers."
The No. 3 doubles tandem of Bleakley/Brock won 8-6 to put the Pack ahead, and Petrovic and Guerra lived up to their top-25 doubles ranking by taking down the Cavs' duo at No. 1, 8-6. NC State trailed at No. 2 doubles, 8-7, when the Pack finished at No. 1 to secure the doubles point.
Alejandra continued her hot play by winning for the sixth time in the last eight ACC matches, including three straight. She defeated Kristen McVitty at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-4.
"Our team, now that I look back on how we have finished, have had a good showing and a good year getting quaility wins," Olsen said. "They know what they need to do to be prepared to play at a high level and we look forward to having an opportunity to continue our season."
Daria Petrovic was named All-ACC for her play this season at No. 1 singles and doubles.
NC State will now await word on receiving a bid to the NCAA Championships.
