GREENSBORO, N.C. – Adam Deleo had three hits and drove in three runs Tuesday, and UNC Greensboro rode a seven-run fifth inning to a 10-8 victory over NC State at the UNCG Baseball Stadium. The Spartans won for the third time in their last four games and improved to 6-5 on the season. The Wolfpack, which lost for the fourth time in its last six games, fell to 10-4 with the loss.
Kory Judd (1-0) started and got the win for UNCG after allowing four runs on four hits in 5 1/3 innings. He walked three and struck out two. Nate Karns, making his first collegiate appearance, took the loss for NC State. Karns allowed three runs, two earned, on three hits in four innings. He walked three and struck out three.
Greg Feltes also had a big day for the Spartans, driving in three runs, and Scott Schneider and Joel Johnson had two hits apiece. Ryan Pond had three hits and an RBI in five at-bats for the Wolfpack.
NC State took its first lead in four games with a run in the top of the first. Joe Florio led off with a double the other way into the gap in left-center field. Ramon Corona grounded out to the right side of the infield to move Florio to third, and Jeremy Synan got the runner home with a bouncer to third.
Marcus Jones led off the top of the third with a single to left-center and Florio followed with a walk. Corona flied to right field, with Jones taking third on the play. Synan delivered again without hitting the ball out of the infield, this time with a squeeze bunt to drive in Jones and make it 2-0, Wolfpack.
Karns cruised through the first two innings, but began to run into trouble after that. He loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the third, but wriggled off the hook by rolling a double-play grounder. He was not so fortunate in the fourth. Schneider led off with UNCG’s first hit of the game, a single through the right side of the infield, and Johnson followed with a single up the middle and under the glove of second baseman Drew Martin. Karns nearly pitched his way out of trouble again, retiring Sean Snell on a fly ball to shallow center field and Matt Gaski on a grounder to first, but Deleo smoked a double down the left-field line to drive in both runners and tie the game at 2-2.
Karns then compounded his problems with some poor fielding. Ricky Orton grounded to first with what should have been the last out of the inning, but Karns, covering the bag on the play, dropped Ferguson’s throw for an error.Tim Carrier followed with a grounder to third that kicked off Florio’s glove for an error and allowed Deleo to score the go-ahead run for the Spartans, giving them a 3-2 lead.
The wheels came off the wagon for the Wolfpack in the bottom of the fifth. Schneider, batting second in the inning, greeted reliever Sam Brown with a long home run off the top of the scoreboard in right-center field to make it 4-2. Johnson singled to shallow right and Brown hit Snell with a pitch to put runners on first and second. Gaski’s sharp grounder up the first-base line kicked off the bag and into right field, driving in Johnson and sending Snell to third. Gaski wound up with an RBI-double, and Deleo singled to right to drive in Snell, move Gaski to third, and send Brown to the showers after just one-third of an inning.
Kyle Rutter came in and Orton ripped his first pitch for a double to right field to drive in Gaski and make it 7-2. Rutter hit Carrier with a pitch to load the bases, and Feltes unloaded them with a drive that carried all the way to the warning track in right-center, a three-run double that gave the Spartans a 10-2 lead. UNCG’s seven runs in the inning was one more than NC State had allowed previously in an entire game all season.
The Pack chipped away over the final four innings, but had too deep a hole to dig out of. Florio led off the top of the sixth with a walk and was forced out on a close play at second on Corona’s grounder to shortstop. Synan walked and Pond cut the lead to 10-3 with a single up the middle, driving in Corona and sending Synan to third base. Lefthander Wes McCall came in to pitch for the Spartans, and Ryan Howard went to bat for Roskopf and lofted a sacrifice fly to right to make it 10-4.
Corona led off the bottom of the eighth with a walk. With one down, Greg Martin came in to pitch for the Spartans and Pond lined a single to center field to put runners on first and second. Martin unloaded a wild pitch to put the runners at second and third, and Ryan Howard’s sacrifice fly to right brought home Corona to bring the Pack to within five at 10-5.
David Lindsay and Matt Payne led off the top of the ninth with walks/ relievers Clay Gibson and Clinton McKinney struck out Dallas Poulk and Vince Gutierrez, respectively, but McKinney walked Florio to load the bases and hit Corona with a pitch to force in a run. Synan hit a sharp grounder to first that kicked off Orton’s glove for a two-run error, trimming the lead to two runs at 10-8, but McKinney got Pond on a fly ball to deep center field to end the game.
NC State will return to action on Wednesday vs. North Carolina A&T. Game time is 3 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on WKNC, 88.1 FM, and will be available on-line on gopack.com through Pack Pass.
