Cullen Jones Second in Semifinals of 50m Freestyle

Former Wolfpack All-American and international standout Cullen Jones has turned in an impressive performance so far in his signature event at the 2007 FINA World Championships in Melbourne, Australia. Jones swam a 22.09 in the first heat of the event for the third fastest time before the semifinal action later in the day. He dropped to a 22.00 for a second place finish in the semifinals and will race in the finals of the event on Saturday.
He will swim in the early morning of Saturday, March 30, on the east coast of the United States as Melbourne is 14 hours ahead of Raleigh, N.C.
Jones, ranked No. 1 in the world for the 50 freestyle in 2006, was an ACC standout and won the 2006 NCAA Championship in the 50 freestyle for the Wolfpack before becoming a professional swimmer. Since then Jones has won individual medals at the US National Championships and the Pan Pac Championships and became the first African-American to hold a world record in swimming when he was a member of the record setting 4x100 relay at the Pan Pacs.
