GREENSBORO, N.C. – For the second time this season, Atlantic Coast Conference Softball Player of the Week accolades are shared, as NC State’s Abbie Sims and North Carolina’s Anna Evans have been tabbed for this week’s honor. Sims receives her second league recognition of the season, while Evans picks up her first.
A native of Artesia, N.M., Sims threw a no-hitter against No. 6 Oklahoma and pitched the Wolfpack past No. 2 Arizona State at the Judi Garman Classic in Fullerton, Calif., last weekend. She helped lead NC State to three wins over ranked opponents. The senior hurler didn’t allow a hit against the nation’s top scoring offense in Oklahoma and held the Sun Devils to just seven in eight innings.
The outfielder was also productive at the plate for NC State, as she collected four RBI, two home runs, one run scored, one double, one walk and a .333 batting average for the week.
Evans proved to be a driving force for a North Carolina team riding a school-record 20-game winning streak, as she put up 31 runs in just four games to help the Tar Heels post a 4-0 record last week. The senior from Fairmont, N.C., led the team in batting average (.769), hits (10), runs scored (8), RBI (7) and total bases, and was the only Tar Heel to record a home run on the week - a two-run walkoff blast that gave UNC its second run-rule victory over Virginia and capped a series sweep of the Cavaliers to start ACC play.
In four games last week, Evans batted .769 as she went 10-for-13 with seven RBI. She added eight runs and had 15 total bases, including two doubles, as she factored directly into 15 of Carolina's 31 runs. Additionally, she collected one stolen base and 10 putouts from the shortstop position.
Both North Carolina and NC State return to the field this week. The Tar Heels will host UNC Wilmington in a doubleheader on Wednesday, March 21, while the NC State Wolfpack travels to Georgia Tech for a three-game series this weekend.
