FULLERTON, Calif. – The NC State softball team fell to No. 12 Washington, 2-0, in the consolation championship game of the Judi Garman Classic on March 18 in Fullerton, Calif. Shaina Ervin (7-7) took the loss, giving up six hits and one earned run while striking out seven batters. Danielle Lawrie (12-3) grabbed the win. With the loss, the Pack falls to 21-11 (2-1 ACC), while the Huskies move to 21-7.
Shaina Ervin hit Alicia Matthews with a pitch to start the top of the second, and Bailey Stenson came on to run in her place. Miranda Ervin then gunned down Stenson attempting to steal second with a perfect throw to shortstop Shanna Smith at the bag. Shaina Ervin then struck out Lawrie and fielded a grounder from Caitlin Noble to end the inning.
Lauren Greer got on first to lead off the top of the third when Smith bobbled a grounder to short. Ashley Charters then beat out an infield single, moving Greer to second. Two at-bats later Dominique Lastrapes singled up the middle, scoring Greer, and giving Washington a 1-0 lead.
Megan Dalthorp lined a base hit to left to start the bottom of the third. Heather Gelbard later singled through the left side, moving Dalthorp to second, and both runners then advanced on a wild pitch. But Lawrie struck out Jen Chamberlin and the Huskies escaped without giving up any runs.
Dani Stuart added an insurance run for Washington with a bloop single into shallow left, scoring Greer, in the top of the seventh.
Lawrie, a 2005 and 2006 Canadian National Team member, was sensational for the Huskies throughout. She retired the last 14 Wolfpack batters in a row, holding the hot State bats to just three hits total.
"I'm really pleased with the effort that our team showed this weekend," said head coach Lisa Navas. "We started off with two tough losses on Friday, and bounced back with three solid wins against ranked teams, two of which are in the top-10.
"Our bats woke up and came up with some big hits in crucial situations," said Navas. "We're ready to get back into ACC play next week, and we're going to continue to work as hard as we can to get better with every single day."
NC State will travel to Atlanta, Ga., next weekend for a three-game set at Georgia Tech to resume ACC play. The Pack and Yellow Jackets will play two games on Saturday, March 24 at 1 and 3 p.m., before wrapping up play on Sunday, March 25, at 12 p.m.
