FULLERTON, Calif. – NC State dropped its second game of the day, 2-0, to No. 5 Arizona at the Judi Garman Classic on Thursday, March 15, in Fullerton, Calif. Shaina Ervin (6-6) took the hard-luck loss, giving up just two runs and seven hits. Taryne Mowatt (12-5) collected the win. With the loss, NC State falls to 18-10 (2-1 ACC) on the season, while the Wildcats climb to 18-5.
Arizona put up a run in the bottom of the second to take an early lead. Callista Balko singled through the left side and later scored as Mowatt reached first on a bobbled ball by Shanna Smith at short.
Jen Chamberlin led off the top of the fourth by smoking a line drive back to the circle off of Mowatt’s leg for a base hit. Krystal Hawkins then came on to run in her place, advancing to second on a sac-bunt from Abbie Sims. Following a Presnell strike out, Smith and Jennifer Patterson walked to load the bases. But Megan Dalthorp grounded out to short, and the Wildcats kept the Pack from scoring.
Laura Klem drilled a double into right-center start the top of the fifth, and then moved to third on a sac-bunt from Blair Harkey. With two outs and Klem on third, Mowatt got Chamberlin out swinging to end the inning.
Adrienne Acton and Caitlin Lowe both reach first on infield singles at the start of the bottom of the fifth, but Acton was forced out at third on a Chelsia Mesa fielder’s choice back to the circle. Ervin then fanned Kristie Fox and Lowe was forced out at third on a fielder’s choice to Smith at short by Leles.
Arizona added its final run in the bottom of the sixth as Balko lead off with a solo home run to left field, moving the score to 2-0.
With two outs in the top of the seventh, Klem reached first on a throwing error by Leles at third. Klem then moved to second on a base hit up the middle from Heather Gelbard, but Claudia Cooper struck out to end the game.
NC State returns to action tomorrow at the Judi Garman Classic, taking on No. 6 Oklahoma at 9:15 p.m. EST.
