RALEIGH, NC. – NC State slugged Elon, 5-0, in the first of two games on the day at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex on Thursday, March 1. Allison Presnell led the team from the plate, going three-for-three with a home run and two singles. In all, the Pack pounded out nine hits, four of which were home runs. With the win, NC State moves to 11-5 on the season, while the Phoenix fall to 5-7.
Heather Gelbard got the Pack started early with a leadoff home run to straightaway center in the bottom of the first. Abbie Sims then reached first on a fielder’s choice. A routine grounder to third by Jen Chamberlin allowed Sims to move to third, and Chamberlin to second, when Ashlee Crowe’s throw to first sailed out of reach. Miranda Ervin then walked to load the bases, but Shanna Smith hit into a fielder’s choice and Megan Dalthorp flew out to center to end the inning.
The bottom of the second started out just like the bottom of the first, as Presnell sent a solo shot over the fence in center field. Krystal Hawkins followed with a bunt single to third, later advancing to second on a wild pitch. Gelbard then singled to right and moved to second as Hawkins was thrown out at the plate in an attempt to score. A sac-bunt from Harkey pushed Gelbard to third, and Sims took first on a walk. Chamberlin added another run with a single through the left side, sending Gelbard across the plate.
Elon replaced Schroeder with Meredith Gay in the circle at the start of the bottom of the fourth, but it was the same old song and dance for the Pack as Smith led off with another solo homer, this time to right center, moving NC State’s lead to 4-0.
Chamberlin crushed her 40th career home run to left-center, a solo shot, in the bottom of the fourth, moving into second-place all-time in the ACC record books.
Jaimie Rao secured Elon’s first hit of the game in the top of the fifth with a one-out infield single, but Sims fanned Brandi Jones and Ashlee Crewe grounded out to Chamberlin to stop any potential threat.
Sims (6-3) grabbed the win while striking out 11 batters and allowing a paltry two hits, as Schroeder (0-3) took the loss.
