PACK HOT TO OPEN SPRING SEASON: The No. 44 Wolfpack women’s tennis team got off to a good start so far in 2007, winning its opening two matches easily and suffering their only two defeats to teams ranked in the top-50. After a tough 4-3 loss to No. 32 Florida International, NC State (3-2 overall, 0-0 ACC) will host Yale (1-2) on Saturday, Feb. 10 at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center. The match is slated for a noon start.
After dropping two hard-fought 4-3 matches against Syracuse and Maryland to start off the season, Yale easily defeated Quinnipiac 6-1 this past Sunday. Senior Olivia Nix has started off the spring season with a perfect 3-0 record at No. 5 singles for the Yale Bulldogs.
FIRST 20 FANS GET AUTOGRAPHED POSTER: The women’s tennis team is encouraging Wolfpack fans to come out to every match when playing at home in the JW Isenhour Complex. On Saturday, Feb. 10, the first 20 fans to come to the match will receive an autographed Wolfpack tennis poster with signatures from the team and coaches. There will also be free candy hearts distributed to all supporters in recognition of the upcomming Valentine holiday.
ROACH ENJOYS EARLY SEASON SUCCESS: Julia Roach has started off the spring season with a perfect record in singles competition. She is currently 4-0 in singles with only one of those matches having to go into a third set. This year she has competed at No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6 singles for the Wolfpack. She has also teamed up with freshman Kate Green to post a 2-0 record at No. 3 doubles.
PACK MAKES SMALL JUMP IN POLLS: After last weekends hard fought loss to No. 32 Florida International and a win over a veteran Penn State squad, NC State jumped from No. 46 to No. 44 in the ITA rankings.
PETROVIC RANKED NO. 43 IN ITA: Freshman Daria Petrovic has earned a preseason spring ranking of No. 43 after her play this fall for the Wolfpack when she posted a 10-4 mark. The No. 43 Petrovic has continued that success in the spring with a 3-1 record with her only loss being to Ela Kaluder of No. 47 Arkansas at the No. 1 spot.
IMPORTANCE OF THE DOUBLE POINT: Through the beginning of the season it has become apparent that the doubles point is very important to the outcome of the match. In all three of the Wolfpack wins this season the team has captured the doubles point and in both of the loses they have conceided the doubles point.
FOUR PLAYERS START SEASON AT 3-1 OR BETTER IN SINGLES: Four Wolfpack netters have started the spring with 3-1 records or better in singles competition through the first five matches. Neils Barringer (wins at No. 3, No. 5, and No. 6 singles) is 3-1, Alejandra Guerra (No. 2, No. 3, and No. 4 singles) is 3-1, and Daria Petrovic (No. 1 singles) is also 3-1 to start the season. The previously mentioned Julia Roach has started off the season with a perfect 4-0 record. Overall (including fall singles), NC State has won 95 matches this season to just 50 losses, a 66% winning percentage.
OLSEN INDUCTED INTO BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE HALL OF FAME: NC State women’s tennis head coach Hans Olsen was inducted into the Big South Conference Hall of Fame on Friday, May 19, during a ceremony held in Hilton Head, S.C. Prior to joining the Pack, Olsen played men’s tennis at Charleston Southern from 1989-92 before serving as a coach at his alma mater from 1997-2001. The event marks the second time that Olsen has been enshrined in a hall of fame, having been induced into the Charleston Southern University Athletics Hall of Fame in October of 20.
17 WINS BREAKS SCHOOL RECORD: The Pack’s 17 wins last season broke the program’s all-time record for most victories overall in a single season. The 1998 team recorded 16 bragging rights, five in ACC play. NC State surpassed that mark with a 4-3 win over William & Mary in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
PACK GRABS FIRST NCAA TOURNAMENT WIN IN SCHOOL HISTORY: With No. 37 NC State and No. 24 William & Mary tied at 3-3 in the first round of the 2006 NCAA Tournament, senior Nandita Chandrasekar found herself in the middle of a dogfight for a ticket to the second round. After dropping the first set to Klaudyna Kasztelaniec, Chandrasekar stormed back to collect the final two frames and hand the Wolfpack women’s tennis program its first ever NCAA Tournament win, 4-3.
EIGHT WINS OVER RANKED SQUADS: NC State downed eight nationally ranked teams last season; No. 25 Florida International, No. 64 Marshall, No. 64 Florida State, No. 33 Virginia, No. 66 Virginia Tech, No. 65 Boston College, No. 29 Maryland and No. 24 William & Mary.
DOUBLE THE POWER: NC State’s combination of sophomore Alejandra Guerra and freshman Daria Petrovic have solidly defeated most of their opponents this year at No. 1 doubles. They started off the year easily winning over Gardner Webb and UNC-Wilmington before falling at No. 47 Arkansas. They recaptured that success over this past weekend defeating Penn State and No. 32 Florida International to improve to 4-1 on the season.
STRONG TRANSITION: Freshmen Kate Green and Catherine Grotz joined the Wolfpack in the spring and immediately made an impact, performing in the top six in the first three matches. Green, who came to NC State from London, England, has started for the Wolfpack at No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6 singles for the Wolfpack on the way to a 3-2 record. Grotz, a Seraing, Belgium native, is 2-1 in singles in her first month of collegiate level play.
