Track Runs Well at New Balance Invite

Raleigh, N.C. – The NC State track and field squads concluded action this weekend, with athletes competing at both the New Balance Invite in New York, and other at the Carolina Invite in Chapel Hill.
At the New Balance Invite on the men’s side, the Pack came away with a NCAA provisional time in the 3,000 meters, and just missed out on a second in that event and also one in the mile.
Wesley Smith recorded a NCAA provisional time in the 3,000 meters, as he was ninth with a time of 8:02.71. John Crew just missed out by a little over one second, as his time of 8:07.52 was 14th.
In the mile, Gavin Coombs ran a 4:04.84 mile for seventh, but missed out on a NCAA provisional time by just 0:00.04 of a second. Stephen Furst was ninth in the mile (4:07.42), while Tibor Vegh ran a 4:08.77.
The men’s side also notched its top two times in the 200 meters this indoor season. Reggie Reese ran a 22.24, while Kevin Hutton was close behind with a 22.76.
At the Carolina Invite, Mitchell Pope competed in his second straight meet in as many days, and once again recorded a NCAA Provisional mark. Pope won the shot put with a heave of 61’09.75”. Chris Crawford was fourth in the weight throw (58’11.50”) and fifth in the shot put (55’02”). Bryce Ruiz brought home a second place finish in the mile with his time of 4:19.50.
Senior Julia Lucas ran once of the top races in NC State history, as she set a new school record in the 3,000 meters in New York.
Lucas finished second in the race with a time of 9:03.47, breaking the school record by almost six seconds. Her time is also a NCAA automatic time, over 12 seconds better than the mark.
NC State also had two other strong showings in that same 3,000 meters, as Kristina Roth was seventh in a time of 9:26.93, and Bona Jones took 10th with a time of 9:33.27. Both of the times were good enough for NCAA provisional marks.
NC State also had three runners in the mile, with Jemissa Hess was eighth in 4:54.36, Angelina Blackmon ran a 5:06.26, and Jennifer Ennis ran a 5:11.07.
DeMiracle Washington also notched a top-10 finish, posting a top leap of 38’07.50” for 10th place in the triple jump.
