TUSCALOOSA, ALA. – No. 22 NC State bounced back from two losses yesterday to down Western Kentucky, 5-1, in the first of two games on Saturday, Feb. 24, at the 2007 Hampton Inn Crimson Classic in Tuscaloosa, Ala. The Pack put seven hits on the board and used a three-run fourth inning to put the game out of reach. With the win, the Wolfpack moves to 8-4 on the season, while the Hilltoppers fall to 4-10.
Heather Gelbard reached on a bobble by shortstop Ashley Contreras to start the bottom of the first. Laura Klem, running for Gelbard, then stole second, before Blair Harkey drew a walk. Both runners then advanced on a fly ball to center from Jen Chamberlin. Following a Miranda Ervin pop-up to first, Abbie Sims singled up the middle, scoring Klem and Harkey to put the Pack up 2-0.
In the bottom of the second, Allison Presnell walked and advanced to second base on a sac-bunt from Megan Dalthorp, but Lisa Nentwig went down swinging and Gelbard grounded out to end the frame.
Sims dismissed five-straight batters swinging between the second and fourth innings, but gave up a solo shot to Becky Horesky with two outs in the bottom of the fourth, putting Western Kentucky on the board. The homer marks the first given up by the Wolfpack pitching staff this season.
The Wolfpack cushioned its lead in the bottom of the fourth off of four hits and one WKU error. Smith reached first on an error by second baseman Terri Ellingsworth, then moved to second on a Presnell ground out. Dalthorp followed with an infield single, pushing Smith to third. With Hawkins running for Dalthorp, Claudia Cooper drilled a pinch-hit double to left, scoring two runs, but was gunned down trying to advanced to third. Gelbard gave the Hilltoppers another blow to the jugular with a tape-measure blast, her third of the season, to center field, increasing the Pack’s lead to 5-1.
Head coach Lisa Navas tweaked the Wolfpack defense in the top of the fifth, moving Presnell to first, leaving Hawkins in the game at right, and inserting Ashley Davis into left. Shannon Smith blooped a single into right field, but Western Kentucky failed to do anything else.
Sims (5-2) allowed just two hits and two walks while striking out 10 batters to earn her fifth win. Jennifer Kempf (2-6) took the loss for the Hilltoppers.
NC State will return to the field shortly, taking on Winthrop. Game time is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. EST.
