Men's Golf Opens Spring Season at Puerto Rico

Raleigh, N.C. – The NC State men’s golf team will begin its 2007 spring season this weekend, as the Pack heads to Rio Grande, Puerto Rico, to compete in the Puerto Rico Classic hosted by Purdue University.
NC State will be sending seniors Garry Hill and Jerry Richardson and sophomores Darren Blair, Andrew Byrd, and Wesley Tucker.
The men's 2007 Puerto Rico Classic will be held Feb. 25-27 at the 6,945-yard, par 72, River Course at the Rio Mar Golf Club at the Westin Rio Mar Beach Resort. It is the seventh year for the 54-hole tournament and includes the top men's programs in the United States.
Thirteen of this year's 18 teams are ranked in the top 25 according to Golfweek, including five of the top six: top-ranked Florida, No. 2 Stanford, No. 4 Oklahoma State, No. 5 Georgia and No. 6 Alabama. Purdue, the host team, is currently ranked No. 43 and is joined by No. 12 Clemson, No. 16 East Tennessee State, No. 19 Georgia Tech, No. 22 Texas, No. 23 Duke and No. 28 Minnesota. Rounding out the field is Purdue, Minnesota, Northwestern, Virginia Tech, Kent State, Illinois and Michigan.
Last year's champion was Georgia with a team score of 843. Chris Kirk (Georgia) won the individual medal with a three-round score of 205.
