GAINESVILLE, FLA. – No. 24 NC State bounced back from an early morning loss by toppling Fordham, 9-1, on Friday, Feb. 16, in the second of two games on the day at the Cox Communication Classic in Gainesville, Fla. Shaina Ervin (1-1) collected her first win of the season from the circle, while Sara Kinney (0-1) took the loss in the Rams season-opener. With the win, the Pack moves to 4-2 on the young season.
After stealing second, Shanna Smith scored on a base hit to center from Jennifer Patterson, putting NC State up 1-0 in the bottom of the first.
The damage, however, was done in the third inning when NC State, thanks in part due to shaky Fordham pitching, awoke from its offensive slumber. The Pack grabbed eight runs on five hits, with four runs scoring on walks. After surrendering four hits and two walks while recording just one out, Kinney was replaced in the circle with third baseman Allison Twarowski.
But the pitching woes continued for the Rams, as Twarowski gave up a single and walked three batters, causing Fordham to move Kinney back to the circle.
The Rams put up a run in the top of the fourth when Twarowski led off with a single and scored on an Erin Fisher double.
NC State will return to the field tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 17, at the Cox Communications Classic. The Pack will take on host No. 19/20 Florida at 1:30 p.m., before taking on Chattanooga at 6:15 p.m. Live stats will be available for both games via the softball schedule page on GoPack.com. An audio broadcast of the contest against the Gators will be broadcast on GatorZone.com.
