CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – No. 22 NC State grabbed one run in the first, and four more in the fifth, to down Gardner-Webb, 5-0, in the second of two games on the day at the Carolina Classic in Chapel Hill, N.C., on Saturday, Feb. 10. Abbie Sims (2-0) collected her second win in as many days as the Pack improved to 2-1 on the season. Gardner-Webb fell to 1-2 with the loss.
Heather Gelbard drew a walk to start the bottom of the first for the Pack and was replaced on the base path by Laura Klem, who quickly advanced to second on a wild pitch from Taryn Beck. Klem then advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from Blair Harkey, which was followed by a Jen Chamberlin walk. As Jennifer Patterson took a called third strike, Chamberlin stole second and caused the catcher, Mandy Ward, to check Klem with a throw down to third. The errant throw, however, was way off target, providing Klem with an opportunity to score and put the Pack up 1-0.
In the top of the third, Abbie Looper followed a two-out Lindsay Cox walk with the Runnin’ Bulldogs first hit on a scalding shot past Klem at second. With Cox on third, Looper then stole second and all of a sudden Gardner-Webb was building a rally. Shanna Smith, however, put the movement to rest by cleanly fielding a Jessi Polk grounder at short and gunning her out at first for the third out.
The Pack’s bats finally woke up in the bottom of the fifth, as Allison Presnell led the inning off with a single through the right side, matched at the next at-bat by a Megan Dalthorp base knock through the left side. Smith then mailed a Beck pitch over the fence near straightaway center, putting NC State up 4-0.
Alison Coffey then took the circle for GWU and surrendered a walk to Ashleigh Davis, who promptly stole second. Gelbard drew another walk and Krystal Hawkins pinch ran in her place. Both runners advanced on a Harkey sacrifice, with Davis scoring during the next at-bat as Chamberlin grounded out to short. That run put the Pack up 5-0 and shut the door on the game.
Sims allowed only two hits throughout her complete game performance, collecting 16 strikeouts and walking three. She struck out at least two batters during all seven innings, fanning three in both the fifth and seventh frames.
NC State will end its tour of duty at the Carolina Classic tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 11, with a 2:30 p.m. game against Coastal Carolina.
