After falling 5-2 to No. 47 Arkansas, NC State (2-1 overall, 0-0 ACC) will host Penn State (0-1) on Friday, Feb. 2 and No. 32 Florida International (1-0) on Sunday, Feb. 4 at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center. Egle Petrauskaite, a sophomore at FIU is ranked in a four-way tie for 95th in the ITA rankings. FIU junior Marijana Cutuk, started a 19 singles match winning streak last February with a win over the Pack’s own Alejandra Guerra, but it was snapped last week in the team’s match against Princeton.
FREE PIZZA ON SUNDAY FOR ALL FANS!: The NC State women’s tennis team would like to thank all of its valuable fans. The team will provide all fans in attendance FREE pizza as a “Thank You” for supporting the women’s tennis team.
PETROVIC RANKED NO. 43 IN ITA: Freshman Daria Petrovic has earned a preseason spring ranking of No. 43 after her play this fall for the Wolfpack when she posted a 10-4 mark. The No. 43 Petrovic won her first singles match of the spring, but then fell to Ela Kaluder of No. 47 Arkansas at the No. 1 spot.
FOUR PLAYERS START SEASON AT 2-0 IN SINGLES: Five Wolfpack netters have started the spring with 2-0 records in singles in their first two matches. Neils Barringer (wins at No. 3 and No. 5 singles), Berkley Brock (No. 1 and No. 2 singles), Kate Green (No. 5 and No. 6 singles), Alejandra Guerra (No. 2 and No. 4 singles), and Catherine Grotz (No. 3 and No. 4 singles) have accomplished a perfect start to their seasons. Overall (including fall singles), NC State has won 87 matches this season to just 46 losses, a 65% winning percentage.
OLSEN INDUCTED INTO BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE HALL OF FAME: NC State women’s tennis head coach Hans Olsen was inducted into the Big South Conference Hall of Fame on Friday, May 19, during a ceremony held in Hilton Head, S.C. Prior to joining the Pack, Olsen played men’s tennis at Charleston Southern from 1989-92 before serving as a coach at his alma mater from 1997-2001. The event marks the second time that Olsen has been enshrined in a hall of fame, having been induced into the Charleston Southern University Athletics Hall of Fame in October of 20.
17 WINS BREAKS SCHOOL RECORD: The Pack’s 17 wins last season broke the program’s all-time record for most victories overall in a single season. The 1998 team recorded 16 bragging rights, five in ACC play. NC State surpassed that mark with a 4-3 win over William & Mary in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
PACK GRABS FIRST NCAA TOURNAMENT WIN IN SCHOOL HISTORY: With No. 37 NC State and No. 24 William & Mary tied at 3-3 in the first round of the 2006 NCAA Tournament, senior Nandita Chandrasekar found herself in the middle of a dogfight for a ticket to the second round. After dropping the first set to Klaudyna Kasztelaniec, Chandrasekar stormed back to collect the final two frames and hand the Wolfpack women’s tennis program its first ever NCAA Tournament win, 4-3.
EIGHT WINS OVER RANKED SQUADS ...: NC State downed eight nationally ranked teams last season; No. 25 Florida International, No. 64 Marshall, No. 64 Florida State, No. 33 Virginia, No. 66 Virginia Tech, No. 65 Boston College, No. 29 Maryland and No. 24 William & Mary.
DOUBLE THE POWER ...: NC State has combinations that produce results, with two different doubles tandems starting the season 2-0. Sophomore Alejandra Guerra and freshman Daria Petrovic solidly defeated both their Gardner Webb and UNC-Wilmington opponents before falling at No. 47 Arkansas. Freshman Kate Green and junior Julia Roach also defeated their UNC-Wilmington competitors, and gave the Wolfpack its only doubles victory against Arkansas. Seniors Lauren Barry and Agustina Arechavaleta have also seen sucess, producing a shutout in their doubles match against Gardner Webb.
STRONG TRANSITION...: Freshmen Kate Green and Catherine Grotz joined the Wolfpack in the spring and immediately made an impact, performing in the top six in the first three matches. Both Green, who came to NC State from London, England, and Grotz, a Seraing, Belgium native, are 2-1 in singles in their first month of collegiate level play.
