RALEIGH, N.C. NC State head swimming and diving coach Brooks Teal and his staff announced the signing of eight student-athletes to the Wolfpack program on Monday, Dec. 10. An array of accomplished high school and prep standouts will join the fold in time for the 2008-09 season, including three for the men’s program and five on the women’s side.
“We’re extremely excited about this very strong recruiting class,” said Teal. “We feel like they fall right in line with the previous two groups, which have both been solid. It’s a good mix of strong talent that can come in, make a big impact in the ACC and helps us out tremendously in the future.”
Five standout student-athletes have inked with the women’s squad: Jessica McBroom, Maggie McEnerney, Morgan Robertson, Meg Thompson and Erica Waters.
A high school All-American and four-year letterwinner at The Woodlands High School, McBroom stands as a junior national qualifier and has served as a team captain. A native of Woodlands, Texas, she has been named to the academic honor roll for three-straight years.
McEnerney, of Alpharetta, Ga., is a four-year varsity letterwinner at Milton High School. A captain during her senior season and team MVP as a junior, McEnerney holds records in the 200 and 400-freesetyle relays, and is also a four-time 5A state qualifier. She has also competed with the Dynamo Swim Club, helping led the squad to a first-place finish at the Southeastern Senior Sectionals in 2007. McEnerney was also a state qualifier and scorer, as well as a sectional qualifier and scorer, from 2004-07 with Dynamo.
Hailing from Dobson, N.C., Robertson won the 2007 NCHSAA 1A/2A state championship in the 100-breast, while finishing second in the 100-fly. Enrolled at Surry Central High School, Robertson grabbed All-American status and finished second in the 100-fly at the 2006 NCHSAA 1A/2A state championship, after grabbing the state title in the 50-free, as well as a second-place finish in the 100-back, the previous year. A NC Zone Team member in 2006, she is a two-time junior national qualifier (2006, 07). Robertson owns six conference championships (05’ 50-free/100-back, 06’ 100-fly/100-back, 07’ 100-breast/100-back), and was named conference MVP in 2005. A three-year scholar athlete, she has been named to the Vocational Honor Society, the Tri-M Music Honor Society and the National Honor Society.
A native of Centreville, Va., Thompson attends Westfield High School where she was named rookie of the year as a freshman, as well as team MVP during her sophomore and junior seasons. She holds school records in the 500-free, 100-breast and multiple relays, and was a finalist at the state championships. In addition to being a junior national qualifier, she has also swam with the Mason Makos Swim Team, where she has been coached by Olympian Peter Ward. Thompson is also a member of the National Honor Society.
A four-year letterwinner at Mount Tabor High School, Waters, of Winston-Salem, N.C., has also swam with the Winston-Salem YMCA Swim Team under head coach Ron Turner. A senior sectional qualifier in 2007, she also qualified for the YMCA nationals from 2004-08. A high school MVP from 2004-07, Waters holds school records in the 50-free, 100-free and 200-free relay. She obtained both all-conference and all-county honors in the 50-free, 100-free, 200-free relay and 400-free relay, and was a 2007 Scholastic All-American.
Conor Brennan, Gaites Brown and Steven Wright will all look to make a big impact for the men.
Brennan, of Littleton, Colo., stands as a relative newcomer on the national sprint circuit. After making his first junior national cut this year under head coach Tom Byorick at Heritage High School, Brennan only looks to improve as he begins his college career next season. An All-American in multiple events, he also served as the captain of his basketball team in 2006. Brennan will pursue a degree in business.
Brown brings a wealth of experience to the Pack. A senior national qualifier out of Richmond, Va., he swims for the nationally recognized NOVA program under his father Jeff Brown. He arrived on the national scene with a tremendous showing at the 2007 junior national meet in Indianapolis, and is an All-American who will make an immediate impact on the sprint and mid-distance freestyle events while in Raleigh. A student at Deep Run High School, Brown plans to pursue a degree in business, alongside a minor in languages.
Hailing from Orlando, Fla., Wright looks to uphold the storied tradition of NC State world-class sprinters. A 2007 Florida state champion in the 50-free and runner-up in the 100-free, Wright brings considerable size, talent and strength to a young corps of sprinters. He is a multiple event All-American and national record holder. Wright also served as team captain for Trinity Preparatory School where he swam under former Wolfpack standout Rocco Aceto. Aside from being a school record holder, he is also an accomplished musician with plans to study pre-med.
NC State will return to action in January of 2008 with two matches in two days at Casey Natatorium. State will take on Gardner-Webb on Friday, Jan. 18 at 5 p.m., before welcoming Clemson on Saturday, Jan. 19 at 11 a.m.
