Hokies Top Women's Swimming and Diving

RALEIGH, N.C. Despite several victories and noteworthy performances, NC State women’s swimming and diving fell to Virginia Tech, 184-116, on Saturday, Dec. 1 at Casey Natatorium in Raleigh. The Pack now holds a 2-3 (0-2 ACC) slate, while VT improves to 8-2 (2-1 ACC).
“We got strong performances today from a lot of people,” said head coach Brooks Teal. “Virginia Tech is a good team, and they came in after a strong showing at an event in Chapel Hill. You always hate to be on the losing end of a meet, but a lot of our kids performed well.”
Head diving coach Ted Hautau echoed those sentiments.
“I was pleased with the performance today,” said Hautau. “The kids are starting to step up, and it shows a lot of promise for where we’re going to be heading into the ACC’s.”
Erica Smith, Anna Linkenauger, Patrice Dason and Ashley Richter took second in the opening 200-medley relay on a 1:46.98 finish. Linkenauger followed by coming in second in the 1000-free with a 10:19.04, marking the top time on the season for the Pack in that event.
Lucy Lindsey staged an impressive comeback win with a 1:55.25 in the 200-free. Trailing at the onset of the final go-around, Lindsey fought back and notched the second-best time on the season in the event for the Wolfpack. The momentum continued to Smith, who then captured first in the 100-back with a 58.34.
Jen Kopenitz snatched her first win of the evening with a 2:05.19 in the 200-butter. Later on she posted another team-best for the year en route to winning a close battle in the 500-free with a 5:02.66.
Dason (24.47) and Ritcher (24.55) took second and third in the 50-free, while Davies (283.05) and Ale (263.48) did the same in the 3-meter dive.
Richter (53.12) and Lindsey (53.44) finished second and fourth in the 100-free, and Linkenauger took second in the 200-breast (2:22.36).
Dason won the 100-butter and fell just shy of reaching an NCAA B’ cut thanks to a 55.58 showing. Davies (253.20) and Ale (245.25) landed second and third in the 1-meter dive, and Kopenitz (2:09.04) and Linkenauger (2:10.27) wound up third and fourth in the 200-IM.
Richter, Lindsey, Dason and Kopenitz ended the affair by winning the 400-free relay on a 3:31.20.
In a back-and-forth battle that came down to the final handful of events, NC State men’s swimming and diving tell fell to Virginia Tech, 155-145. The loss sends the Pack to 3-1 (1-1 ACC) on the year, while the Hokies climb to 6-3 (1-2 ACC).
Steve Mellor, Jack Roney, Taylor Goodwin and Dan Glauber got things started with a second-place (1:32.87) finish in the 200-medley relay. Andrew Lester then won the 1000-free on a 9:26.60, as Cole Yarborough took third with a 9:40.98. State grabbed two of the top three spots in the 200-free, as Andrew Lester won with a 1:39.76, and Jon Vorpagel placed third on a 1:43.44. Goodwin then placed third in the 100-back with a 52.20.
Dan Forsythe got a near-capacity crowd off of its feet with a dramatic win in the 100-breast. Trailing during the start of the last lap, Forsythe muscled past VT’s Scott Harkins to claim first with a 57.27 mark. That time stands as the second-best in the event on the year for the Wolfpack.
State grabbed three of the top four marks in the 200-butter, as Mellor (1:50.82), Mike Seiferth (1:53.19) and Derek Ernst (1:56.25) finished first, third and fourth respectively.
In the first round of diving action, Austin Hampton took second (312.60) and Alex Dambly finished fourth (260.70) in the 1-meter.
McGee (46.71) and Glauber (47.01) took second and fourth in the 100-free. Mellor then won the 200-back with a 1:51.64 mark, as Kevin Woodhull-Smith (1:53.53) and Ben Mechak (1:53.81) finished second and fourth. Forsythe grabbed another victory on a 2:06.31 stamp in 200-breast, while Roney (2:06.76) and Danny Voss (2:09.67) followed in third and fourth.
McGee (first, 4:35.27), Lester (second, 4:35.53) and Yarborough (fourth, 4:42.27) dominated for the Pack in the 500-free, and Seiferth took third in the 100-butter with a 51.07.
Hampton led the Wolfpack divers in the 3-meter dive with a score of 337.35.
Trailing by eight points with just two races remaining, NC State put together some solid showings, but couldn’t climb over Virginia Tech’s lead. Mellor won again in the 200-IM with a 1:53.22, as Woodhull-Smith (1:55.11) and Greg Baskwell (1:56.34) came in second and fourth. McGee, Lester, Andrew Keenan and Glauber (3:06.06) finished third in the evening’s final event, the 400-free relay.
NC State will return to action in January of 2008 with two matches in two days at Casey Natatorium. State will take on Gardner-Webb on Friday, Jan. 18 at 5 p.m., before welcoming Clemson on Saturday, Jan. 19 at 11 a.m.
