Swimming & Diving Travels to Georgia Tech Invite

RALEIGH, N.C. - The NC State men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will travel to Atlanta, Ga. this weekend to participate in the Georgia Tech Invitational. Action will run from Friday, Nov. 16 through Sun., Nov. 18. The Pack will compete against teams from Duke, Miami, LSU and Florida Atlantic. The men’s squad has started off the season at 3-0 with wins over East Carolina, William & Mary and Duke while the women’s team enters the meet with a 2-2 slate after downing William & Mary and Campbell.

The men’s team returns to the water after a decisive 217-82 victory over Duke on Oct. 26. Against the Blue Devils the red and white took first in 15 of the 16 events. Stephen Mellor (100-back, 200-back, 400-IM) led the team to victory by winning three different events. Andrew Lester (1650-free, 500-free), Mason McGee (200-free, 100-free), Dan Forsythe (100-breast, 200-breast) and Mike Seiferth (100-fly, 200-fly) also chipped in with two victories apiece.
The women’s team beat Campbell (239-46), but narrowly lost to Duke (141-156) on Oct. 26. During the meet Jennifer Kopenitz nearly broke the school record on her way to victory in the 200-back with a time of 2:01.10. Kopenitz also took first in the 400-IM with a time of 4:23.88. Jessica Ward contributed by winning the 200-breast, and by teaming up with Erica Smith, Patrice Dason and Ashley Ritcher for a victory in the 200-medley. Ritcher also won the 50-free with a time of 24.51.
State’s swimming and diving teams will return to action on Saturday, Dec. 1, as they host ACC foe Virginia Tech at 1 p.m. in the Casey Natatorium.
