Swim & Dive Impressive Against Campbell, Duke

RALEIGH, N.C. The NC State men’s and women’s swimming and diving squads each picked up wins on Friday, Oct. 26, at the Willis R. Casey Aquatics Center on the NC State campus in Raleigh. The men climbed to 3-0 (1-0 ACC) with a 217-82 decision over Duke, while the women moved to 2-2 (0-1 ACC) by topping Campbell (239-46) and falling to the Blue Devils (156-141).
The men took first in 15 of 16 events, as Stephen Mellor (100-back, 200-back, 400-IM) led the charge with three victories. Andrew Lester (1650-free, 500-free), Mason McGee (200-free, 100-free), Dan Forsythe (100-breast, 200-breast) and Mike Seiferth (100-butterfly, 200-butterfly) each had two a piece.
Mellor, Forsythe, Taylor Goodwin and Dan Glauber opened by taking the 200-medley relay with a 1:33.47. Glauber, Travis Martinez, Brian Crowder and McGee closed by collecting the 200-free relay on a 1:25.33.
Lester grabbed the 1650-free (15:46.90) and 500-free (4:34.95), while Cole Yarborough placed second in the 1650 (16:23.00) and third in the 500 (4:43.69). McGee collected the 200-free (1:41.38) and 100-free (47.38), while Martinez (47.47) placed second in the 100 (47.47) and 50-free (21.95) behind the winning Glauber (21.25).
Mellor (50.24, 1:46.76) placed first in both the 100-back and 200-back, while Kevin Woodhull-Smith (52.87, 1:53.54) finished second in both events. Mellor later claimed the 400-IM with a 4:01.25, with Lester (4:07.56) took second and Woodhull-Smith (4:09.97) came in third.
The 100 and 200-breast both belonged to Forsythe (58.05, 2:07.40), while Jack Roney (59.50, 2:09.49) placed second in both. Greg Baskwell (1:00.28, 2:11.16) placed fourth and third in the 100 and 200-breast respectively.
Seiferth won both the 200 (1:53.17) and 100-butterfly (51.14).
Austin Hampton won the 1-meter dive with a 323.03, while Alex Dambly (267.38) and Scott Blackwelder (206.78) finished fourth and fifth. Dambly finished second overall in the 3-meter dive, the only event the men didn’t win, with a 309.38.
On the women’s side, Jennifer Kopenitz fell just shy of the school-record (2:01.10 by Nancy Chapman in 1993) in the 200-back with a 2:01.78 to claim first. Kopenitz’s mark takes third-place in State’s record books. Anna Linkenauger finished second (2:06.17) in the 200-back, while Erica Smith (59.79), Allison Hagan (1:00.43) and Amanda Panty (1:00.48) placed second, fourth and fifth respectively in the 100-back.
Kopenitz, however, wasn’t done with just the backstroke. She won the 400-IM with a 4:23.88 and later took second in the 200-butterfly with a 2:04.22. Her 400-IM time was good for sixth-best in school history. Patrice Dason grabbed second in the 100-butterfly thanks to a 57.58. Linkenauger was second in the 400-IM with a 4:28.79.
Smith, Jessica Ward, Dason and Ashley Ritcher took the 200-medley relay with a 1:46.92 time. Richter, Dason, Panty and Lucy Lindsey later took second in the 200-free relay with a 1:37.20.
Richter won the 50-free (24.51) and 100-free (52.98), while Lindsey took first in the 200-free (1:54.57). Lindsey also placed third in the 500-free (5:09.77), while Dason finished second in the 50-free (24.68). Maresa Like-Matthews picked up third in the 1650-free (17:42.55) and fourth in the 500-free (5:12.00).
Jessica Ward claimed the 200-breast with a 2:20.18, and Sarah Merritt took forth on a 2:24.88. Linkenauger (1:06.61) took second in the 100-breast, while Ward (1:06.66) and Jessica Steward (1:08.21) placed third and fifth respectively.
In diving, Kristin Davies took second (2:51.18) in the 1-meter, while Chelsea Ale (245.93) placed third. Ale (246.45) was second in the 3-meter, as Davies (204.60) claimed fourth.
NC State will return to action at the Georgia Tech Invite in Atlanta, Ga., Nov. 16-18.
