WILMINGTON, N.C. The NC State Women’s Golf team is preparing on the eve of The Landfall Tradition for its final tournament of the fall season. The Wolfpack will enter Friday’s morning round at the Country Club of Landfall ranked 34th in the nation by GolfWeek.
A field of 12 women’s teams will vie for the respective titles in the unique event being hosted by the University of North Carolina Wilmington. An improving weather pattern and near-ideal course conditions should make for outstanding scores over the course of the three-day, 54-hole tournament.
“We’re extremely excited about this year’s event,” said Chris Card, Director of Golf at CCL. “Despite the current drought and a shortage of rainfall, the conditions are fantastic. The greens and fairways are perfect. It’s in excellent shape, and we’re ready for the 24 teams.”
The women’s field is exceptionally strong, featuring eight teams ranked in Golfweek’s Top 50. Six players are ranked in the Top 40, with Purdue’s Maria Hernandez checking in at No. 15.
Led by Hernandez, the Boilermakers hold down the No. 12 spot, followed by Wake Forest (18), Michigan State (22), Virginia (25), North Carolina (28), NC State (34), Tulsa (40) and Ohio State (43).
For the Wolfpack, Lauren Doughtie (74.1), Emily Street (74.3) and Stephanie Derrey (74.5) have been a mark of consistency through three tournaments this fall, with each player finishing in the top-20 twice.
The three-day event will run Friday to Sunday with a 9:12 am start each day and is free and open to the public.
