Men's Swim & Dive Controls Season Opener

GREENVILLE, N.C. Two wins in one day. That’s what the NC State men’s swimming and diving program picked up to begin the 2007-08 season in Greenville, N.C., on Saturday, Oct. 20. The Wolfpack topped both East Carolina (204-96) and William & Mary (234-64), dominating throughout the entire competition. In all, State won 14 of 16 total events. The Pack now stands at 2-0 on the young season.
In the relays, Taylor Goodwin, Day Forsythe, Mike Seiferth and Dan Glauber finished second in the 200-medley with a 1:34.87. Travis Martinez, Goodwin, Brian Crowder and Glauber later won the 200-freestyle on a 1:25.68.
The Pack took first place in all five of the freestyle events. Andrew Lester won both the 1000 (9:25.55) and 500 (4:46.56), while Mason McGee finished first in the 200 (1:42.64), and 100 (47.41) while also grabbing second in the 500 (4:41.58). Glauber collected the 50 on a 21.30, while Crowder placed fifth (21.92). Martinez took third in the 100 (47.56) and fifth in the 200 (1:44.59), while Jon Vorpagel finished forth in the 200 (1:44.53) and fifth in the 500 (4:46.95). Nick Brittis (9:52.10) and Danny Voss (10:10.92) placed third and fourth respectively in the 1000.
Stephen Mellor won the 200-backstroke (1:50.05), 200-butterfly (1:50.72) and the 200-IM (1:54.04). Seiferth took first in the 100-butterfly (51.38), while Glauber placed fourth (52.50). Also in the 200-butterfly, Seiferth grabbed third (1:54.83) and Kevin Woodhull-Smith came in fourth (1:55.13). Woodhull-Smith also placed second in the 200-IM with a 1:56.00.
Forsythe won both of the breaststroke events, taking the 100 with a 57.84, and the 200 with a 2:07.57. Roney grabbed two top-five finishes by claiming fourth (59.37) in the 100 and second in the 200 (2:08.28). Greg Baskwell took fifth (1:00.12) in the 100, and Voss found the same spot in the 200 with a 2:10.42.
State grabbed three of the top-five spots in both of the diving events, showing strength under the direction of new diving coach Ted Hautau. Austin Hampton won both the 3-meter (337.35) and 1-meter (324.90), while Alexander Dambly took third in the 3-meter (298.10) and second in the 1-meter (303.80). Scott Blackwelder finished fourth (254.15) and fifth (244.45) respectively in the 3 and 1-meter events. Hampton and Dambly's scores both meet qualifiers for the NCAA zone championships.
NC State will return to work next Friday, Oct. 26, at Casey Natatorium on the NC State campus. The Pack will face Campbell and Duke beginning at 5 p.m.
