M. Tennis Advances to Round of 16 at ITA Regionals

NC State men's tennis has two singles players and a doubles team in the round of 16 at the ITA Mideast Regionals in Charlottesville, Va. Nick Cavaday and Jay Weinacker, both seeded players, advanced to play for a spot in the quarterfinals in the singles draw. Derek Stephens and Christian Welte, who both went 1-1 in the main draw in singles, advanced to the round of 16 in the main doubles draw.
Cavaday, the No. 5 seed, defeated Maciek Sykut of Florida State in three sets after losing the first, 6-4. Cavaday advanced with wins in the final two sets, 7-5, 6-1. He then defeated Lisandro Picardo of ETSU, 6-3, 6-0 and will now face Stefan Hardy, the No. 9 seed from North Carolina.
Weinacker, the No. 17 seed in the main draw, won a pair of matches as well on Friday. Weinacker downed Oscar Posada of ETSU, 7-5, 6-1 before facing Alexandru Cojanu in the round of 32. Weinacker prevailed, 6-4, 7-6 (3) and will face Martin Sayer of Radford, the No. 2 seed, in the round of 16.
In doubles, Stephens and Welte picked up an 8-5 win over Michael Coleman and Nickolai Nielsen of Maryland. The Wolfpack duo will face Teddy Angelinos and Lee Singer of Virginia Saturday afternoon.
