RALEIGH, N.C. - Virginia Tech’s Laurie Beth Puglisi and Julian Johnson each scored twice in a 4-1 win over the NC State women’s soccer team on Sunday at Method Road Soccer Stadium.
NC State (5-6-2, 0-5 ACC) sophomore Katie Ruiz scored the lone Wolfpack goal, her second of the season.
Virginia Tech’s first goal came at the 7:46 mark when Johnson's throw-in caromed off a Wolfpack defenders head into the net. By rule, the goal is credited to Johnson because the Pack defender never fully gained control of the ball as it bounced off her head past the keeper.
Less than 20 minutes later, the Hokies’ used the combination of Puglisi and Johnson for a 2-0 edge going into halftime.
The Wolfpack entered the second half poised to make a comeback. Less than a minute into play, freshman Kara Baldy nearly cut the deficit in half after taking a strong shot from 15 yards, but goalkeeper Ashley Owens made the stop.
Puglisi later scored her second goal by heading in Kelly Lynch’s free kick in the 61st minute.
Baldy was again in a good scoring situation after the Hokies’ took a 3-0 advantage. Ruiz took a corner kick for the Pack, and a scramble in front of the net provided Baldy an opportunity to score, but the Virginia Tech defense booted the ball out of the box.
Johnson added a goal of her own to her two previous assists at the 65:55 mark. The Virginia Tech forward received a pass in front of the goal from Jennifer Harvey after Erin Moore began the play with a corner kick.
Ruiz prevented a shutout by taking a free kick from 35 yards out and blasting the ball into the upper right corner over Owens’ hands in the 87th minute.
Sophomore Sydney Little had two saves for the Pack in the loss, while Owens had three.
NC State will continue conference play as the Pack hosts Clemson on Thursday, Oct. 18. The match will take place at Method Road at 4 p.m.
