Raleigh, N.C. - Freshman James McGee of the NC State men's tennis team offered a phenomenal showing recently at Ireland's National Indoor Championships, held Dec. 27-31. Due to his performance, McGee stands as an early favorite to be selected to Ireland's acclaimed Davis Cup squad. McGee, who entered the tournament unseeded, won his way into the national championship match in both singles and doubles.
In the first round of play, McGee topped fourth-seeded Stephen Nugent, 7-6, 6-3, before downing Daniel Glancy, 6-1, 6-1. In his third bout, McGee easily knocked off 2005 champion Eoin Heavey, 6-2, 6-0. Against fifth-seeded Barry King in the semifinals, McGee stayed on top of his game, grabbing a 6-2, 7-6 decision.
Heavey currently plays at Cal, while King competes at Notre Dame.
Despite not losing a single set in his quest to reach the championship match, McGee became injured during the onset of play against second-seeded Nathan Rooney. Leading 6-5 early in the match, McGee suffered an injury that forced him to retire from play, thus handing the championship over to Rooney.
According to Wolfpack head coach Jon Choboy, McGee's showing gives him a solid shot at making Ireland's Davis Cup team.
"Traditionally, the winner of this tournament is asked to participate on Ireland's Davis Cup team," said Choboy. "Nathan Rooney, who James was playing when he was forced to retire, is a native of Great Britain, so obviously he won't be playing with them. There is some talk that James will be selected in his place."
In doubles, McGee played for the national title with former Wolfpack netter and longtime friend Conor Taylor. The duo entered the tournament as the third-seeded pair, collecting three wins before falling in the championship bout to the second-seeded duo.
