Barwegen, Whitson Pace Pack on Senior Day

Seniors Lindsay Barwegen and Kerry Whitson turned in typical performances in their signature events on Senior Day as the Wolfpack fell to the South Carolina Gamecocks at the Casey Natatorium. Barwegen took the 1000 freestyle by nearly four seconds and Whitson won the 200 free to pace the Wolfpack early. NC State won both diving events as well but it wasn’t enough in the 148-5.-93.5 loss.
Barwegen swam a 10:15.20 in the 1000 free, bettering her previous team-high this season by more than four tenths of a second. She would later finish second in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:05.05. The senior has 11 top-5 finishes this season, second on the team.
Whitson won the 200 free in a time of 1:52.52, her third fastest swim of the season in the event that she leads the team in. She finished second in the 50 freestyle as well and now has nine top-5 finishes in 2006-07.
The divers once again made a strong contribution to the team effort, taking four of the top-5 spots in the 3-meter competition with Natalie Swisher winning the event with a score of 244.65.
In the 1-meter, Emily Cheffins and Kristen Davies – in her first meet this season – finished 1-2 in the event.
Anna Linkenauger finished second in the 200 IM (2:09.62), second in the 200 backstroke (2:09.79) and third in the 200 breaststroke (2:26.68) in another strong meet for the freshman standout.
Kathryn Creech swam a 2:08.91 in the 200 fly and Patrice Dason turned in a third place showing in the 50 free (24.86) and finished fourth in the 100 free (54.09) for the Wolfpack.
Laura Neely, Melissa Jamerino and Amy Baskwell were also honored at the meet as Wolfpack seniors.
The women return to the pool on January 23 when they host North Carolina in the final home meet of the season.
