Williamsburg, Va. - The NC State women's soccer team (5-1-2) fell on Sept. 17 to Virginia Commonwealth, 3-1, in the team's final game of the William and Mary Tournament. The loss is the red and white's first of the season. The Wolfpack's lone goal was scored by junior Jessica O'Rourke, and senior goalkeeper Megan Connors had five saves. With the loss, the Pack falls to 5-1-2, and the Rams improve to 4-2-2.
VCU was the first to strike with a goal in just under five minutes in play. Megan Flanagan headed the ball to Pernilla Jansson, who shot the ball past Connors. The red and white was quick to reply at the 10:13 mark when O'Rourke headed the ball off a corner kick from freshman Katie Ruiz. The goal was O'Rourke's sixth this season. The score remained tied, 1-1, at the half.
The first goal of the second half was scored in the 53rd minute when VCU's Stephanie Power made a shot from 25 yards out. The Pack was never able to answer back, and VCU scored the third and final goal at the 71:27 mark. Jansson scored the insurance goal, and her second of the game for VCU, on a header off a corner from Leigh Anthony.
The Wolfpack begins ACC play this week as they host Miami on Thursday, Sept. 21 at 4 p.m. at Method Road Soccer Stadium.
