Former NC State golfers Carl Pettersson and Tim Clark are both under par and both will be around for the weekend, but both will also have quite a mountain to climb if they expect to contend for the British Open championship. Pettersson followed up an opening round 68 with a 72 on Friday, a score that leaves him -4 at the halfway mark of the 72-hole event. Clark heads into the weekend at -3 after shooting rounds of 72 and 69, respectively.
Under normal circumstances, those scores would be right in the hunt at the world's oldest major championship. But with this year's host course - Hoylake in Liverpool, England - parched by a summer drought, others have taken better advantage of a track that's playing relatively short.
The man that Pettersson and Clark are chasing happens to be perhaps the best frontrunner in golf: Tiger Woods. The world's number one player fired a 65 on Friday and is in the clubhouse at 12-under par.
On Friday, Pettersson, who won the PGA tour's Memorial Tournament a month ago, salvaged his round by recording birdies on two of his final four holes.
Clark also finished strong on Friday, playing the final three holes in two-under par.
