RALEIGH, N.C. - Will Shaw of the NC State men's tennis team was among the names announced for the 2006 All-ACC Academic Men's Tennis Team by conference Commissioner John D. Swofford this week. Shaw, a native of England, received his degree in business management during May graduation ceremonies and plans to begin pursuing a master's degree at NC State in the coming fall semester.
To be eligible for consideration to the All-ACC Academic Men's Tennis Team, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during their academic career.
Shaw enjoyed arguably his most successful season at NC State during his senior campaign. Shaw formed with fellow senior Val Banada to construct one of the Pack's most threatening doubles combos, going 14-10 at No. 1 and finishing the season ranked No. 56 nationally in the Fila Collegiate Tennis Rankings released by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
Winning 14 of his matches this past season in straight-sets, tied for third-best on the team, Shaw finished the year with a 17-10 singles mark, winning matches at all spots in the Wolfpack lineup, with the exception of No. 3.
NC State finished the year with a No. 42 final national ranking, going 20-11 and making it to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1999. The red and white's 20 wins on the season stand as the most in a single year in program history.
