Raleigh, N.C. - The NC State men's golf team was selected to the NCAA Men's Golf Regional Championships Monday evening with an at-large bid. The Wolfpack will be one of 27 teams competing at the West Regional, which will be played May 18-20 at the Tucson National Golf Club in Tucson, Arizona. The NCAA Division I Men's Golf West Regional is a preliminary round of the NCAA Division I Men's Championship. The West Regional will consist of a 54 hole tournament with 27 teams and six individual players competing. The low 10 teams and low two individuals not on those teams will advance to the NCAA Championships, which will be held at the Crosswater Golf Club in Sunriver, Oregon.
The NC State men's golf program will be making its 15th trip, and the eight in the last nine years, to the NCAA Regionals, all under the direction of coach Richard Sykes. The Pack has been successful its last four trips to the NCAA Regionals, all top-10 finishes. In 2004 NC State tied for 10th, and finished third in 2003, fifth in 2002 and second in 2001.
NC State has never been place in the West Regional, and the Pack is the only ACC team to head to Arizona. In all, eight ACC teams qualified for the NCAA Regionals.
The Wolfpack is recently coming off of a fourth place finish at the ACC Championships back on April 23. NC State placed three golfers in the top-20, and as a team finished at 11-under par. Freshman Nathan Spoon had NC State's top finish, as he was sixth at 6-under par. NC State will also be led by senior Stephen Lewton, who recently was named All-ACC. Lewton has seven top-10 finishes this season, and won both the Seminole Intercollegiate and the Cavalier Classic this year.
