Raleigh, N.C. - The NC State men's golf team finished with a strong opening day round of 6-under par (282), and currently sits in fourth place out of 27 teams at the NCAA West Regional Championships being held this weekend at Tucson, Arizona. The Wolfpack had three golfers finish under par for the first round, being led by freshman Nathan Spoon's in sixth place at 4-under par. NC State will tee off in the second round at 7:47 a.m. pacific tomorrow morning, and the third round will be played on Saturday.
"It was a pretty nice day," said head coach Richard Sykes. "We left some strokes out there. It's our first experience in this beautiful desert. We hope we can do a little better each day."
Freshman Nathan Spoon led the way for the Pack on the first day of action, sitting in sixth place after shooting 4-under par (68). Spoon had five birdies on the day, compared to just one bogey.
"I played quite nice," said Spoon. "I had two birdies in the first two holes. I was five-under through 14 and made a mistake on that hole that cost me a bogey. I played nice today and hit it off the tee well."
Fellow freshman Darren Blair was close behind shooting a 2-under par (70) after the first round. Just like Spoon, Blair had just one bogey and totaled three birdies.
Junior Garry Hill also finished under par for the first round, shooting a 1-under par (71). Hill had three birdies, including a birdie on the Par 3 No. 4 hole.
Senior Stephen Lewton and junior Jerry Richardson each shot a 1-over par (73), and both finshed with three birdies for the round.
NC State will tee off in the second round tomorrow at 7:47 a.m. pacific time. The tee times and final pairings for Saturday's final round will be completed after all action is concluded tomorrow.
