Track Sends Athletes to Prestigious Penn Relays

Raleigh, N.C. - The NC State track and field squads will be sending 11 athletes to Philadelphia, Pa., this weekend to compete in the 112th edition of the Penn Relays at the University of Pennsylvania's Franklin Field. This years Penn Relays will consist of 33 hours of competition, and over 425 races. Known as one of the biggest meets during the collegiate season, the Penn Relays hold races for college, high school and professional athletes. The meet will be held Thursday till Saturday.
NC State will first be in action on Thursday evening, with the men's collegiate steeplechase championship. Both Gavin Coombs and John Henderson will compete in this race at 7:15 p.m. Ginger Wheeler will run in the women's collegiate 5,000 meter championship at 8:25 p.m. Finally on Thursday night, NC State will have three runners in the men's collegiate 5,000 meters championship at 9:05 p.m. Stephen Furst, Bryce Ruiz and Freddy Torres will all be competing.
On Friday, two members of the men's team will compete in the shot put. Mitchell Pope will throw at 10:30 in the men's championship shot put, and Chris Crawford will compete at 12:00 in the men's shot put. The lone race for NC State on Friday will be the women's 4x1500 meter relay. Angelina Blackmon, Jemissa Hess, Julia Lucas and Kristina Roth will compete in the 1:20 p.m. race.
Jemissa Hess will be the lone NC State participant on Saturday, when she runs in the Women's Olympic Development mile at 4:50 p.m.
