Pope, Roth Earn All-ACC Honors

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Mitchell Pope earned All-ACC honors in the shot put and Kristina Roth earned All-ACC honors in the 3,000m steeplechase to lead NC State in day two of the ACC Outdoor Track & Field Championships Friday at Wake Forest University's Kentner Stadium. Pope landed a career best throw of 60-1 to take third place in the shot put, score for the Wolfpack and regionally qualify again. Roth ran a NCAA regional qualifying time of 10:28.25 for third place in the steeple.
Chris Kollar and Stephen Furst qualified for the finals of the 1,500m with top 12 finishes in the preliminaries, while Jemissa Hess and Julia Lucas qualified for the finals of the women's 1,500m. Reggie Reese qualified for the finals of the 100m with a seventh place finish in the prelims and T.J. Sheppard missed the cut by four thousandths of a second.
Angelina Blackmon qualified for the finals of the 800m with a fourth place finish in the prelims and Hess took ninth place, missing the cut by two hundredths of a second. Kevin Hutton was the runner-up in the 400m hurdles prelims, qualifying for Saturday's final and he also qualified for the 200m final with a career best time of 21.33 for eighth place in the prelims.
Gavin Coombs, John Henderson and Tibor Vegh all scored in the men's steeplechase with NCAA regional qualifying times. Coombs finished fourth with a career best time of 8:57.65, missing All-ACC honors by two seconds, Henderson took fifth at 9:03.09 and Vegh ran a 9:04.70 for seventh.
Mattie Bethea scored for NC State with an eighth place finish in the heptathlon and Laila Thomas finished 10th. Bethea took seventh in the long jump portion with a mark of 17-10.75, fifth in the javelin with a mark of 99-4 and 12th in the 800m with a time of 2:47.25. Thomas ran a 2:42.87 for 11th place in the 800m, hit 77-8 for 11th in the javelin and reached 17-2.25 for ninth in the long jump.
Chris Crawford hit 50-1.75 in the shot put for 10th place.
The NC State women's team is in sixth place after seven events and the Wolfpack men are in seventh after eight events.
