SAN DIEGO, CALIF. - The No. 38 NC State women's tennis team notched its seventh shutout of the season with a win, 7-0, over Penn State on Tuesday, March 7, in a neutral-court match in San Diego, Calif. The Pack won two doubles bouts before sweeping through singles to collect the team decision. With the victory, the Pack moves to 10-2 (0-2 ACC) on the season, while the Lady Lions fall to 4-5 (0-1 Big Ten).
The red and white began the match by securing the doubles point with two wins. Senior Nandita Chandrasekar and sophomore Elin Stahl Johansson downed Lauren Holzberg and Jenny Shular, 8-3, at No. 2, while sophomore Julia Roach and freshman Shona Lee blanked Katelyn BeVard and Dorothy Dohanics at No. 3, 8-0. Sasha Abraham and Andreea Niculescu upset senior Barbara Orlay and freshman Alejandra Guerra, currently ranked No. 39 nationally, at No. 1, 8-6.
NC State cruised through singles, winning at all spots and picking up five straight-set victories. Orlay won at No. 1 over Abraham, 2-6, 6-1, 6-4, while Lee knocked off Niculescu at No. 2, 6-2, 6-1. Guerra downed BeVard, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 3, Chandrasekar upped Shular at No. 5, 7-6 (6), 6-4, and Barringer topped Leyla Morzan, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 6. Roach remained undefeated on the season, winning her eighth match over Holzberg at No. 4, 6-4, 6-0.
The Pack will end its road trip in San Diego with a match at No. 40 San Diego State on Thursday, March 9, at 2 p.m. The Aztecs are currently 7-4.
