TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Stephen Lewton was the individual medalist and the NC State men's golf team finished second at the Seminole Intercollegiate March 5-7 at the par 72 Golden Eagle Country Club. Lewton followed up a six under second round with a third round 67 to tie for first place with Dustin Johnson from Coastal Carolina at 13 under. Lewton then defeated Johnson in a playoff round to capture the championship.
Lewton's tournament total of 203 ranks the second-lowest in school history, his second round score of 66 is two strokes off the school record and both numbers are the lowest at NC State in three years. The senior from Milton Keynes, England, becomes the first Wolfpack golfer to win a tournament since Justin Walters took the 2003 Puerto Rico Classic.
NC State followed a five under second round with a four under in the final round to beat out North Carolina for second place at six under. Darren Blair carded a third round 69, an improvement of eight strokes from the day before to finish tied for 27th place with teammate Taylor Crosby at four over. Crosby shot even par in the second round. Jerry Richardson followed up a one under second round with a one over third round to finish two over and tied for 19th. Nathan Spoon also competed for the Wolfpack.
Coastal Carolina won the three-day, 54-hole, 13-team event with a 13 under total. NC State returns to action next weekend at the Chris Schenkel E-Z-Go Invitational, March 18-19 at Forest Heights Country Club in Statesboro, Ga.
