After a short delay at the airport, we were happy to see the bus waiting for us when we landed in Atlanta. We were thankful for the bus rather than vans because we knew we would watch movies, have more seat room, and more importantly have more storage room for our bags. This feature was particularly important seeing that Miranda and Shaina brought large red duffle bags as carry-ons, which wouldn't have fit in vans.
Our game times for the Buzz Classic were perfect. We were able to sleep in a little each day and enjoy the large breakfast that was available to us downstairs, with anything we could have asked for. They had fresh fruit every morning, and plenty of it, so Brooke (Isley) and Megan (Dalthorp) were in Heaven. Out of the 25 teams that were in the tournament, we saw about 8 of them each morning at breakfast. With all those girls together at once, I heard an old man behind me in line say that he felt like he was at the Student Union again.
We played three days straight and won 6 of our 7 games. Geebs (Heather Gelbard) won MVP for us with 5 homeruns and a tournament batting average of .444. She wasn't the only one to drop bombs this weekend. Miranda, Megan, Abbie, Lisa N., and Jen joined in the fun as well. After beating Syracuse and Virginia, we lost to Georgia Tech in the championship game. We were able to go back to the hotel for a late checkout and shower for our long bus ride to Jacksonville.
We got into Jacksonville, Fla. about 1:15am and went straight to bed. The next day, Laura, Caroline, JP, Beth, Patrick and Jay went to the beach to enjoy the sun while everyone else relaxed at the hotel. We met for lunch at Ruby Tuesday's and G-Bo (Heather Gelbard) was surprised when the waitress brought her a Diet Coke and told her Coach ordered it for her. G-Bo thought it was some kind of sick joke so she looked at Coach for verification. Coach said because she hit 5 home runs this weekend, she deserved one!
Then we were off to the field to work out our stiffness from the long bus ride and a weekend full of games. UNF's field was pretty nice and the weather was even better. We hit and took a few ground balls, just enough to get ready for Tuesday's games. After that, we headed back to the hotel to get ready for dinner.
We went to Joe's Crab Shack for dinner, which was a very entertaining experience. We celebrated Laura and Alycia's birthday early, so they had to put pirate hats on and stand up with swords in their hands as we sang to them. Mr. Sims was so kind as to buy us all dessert, so we each ordered one and shared with one other person. After pigging out we were waiting for our check and discovered some of the girls have some great hidden talents. This all began with Caroline's inability to press her lips together and role them. It escalated into rolling of the tongue and Abbie and Lisa Gott's competition to suck their nostrils in, and I was called over to prove that I could pick my nose with my tongue. This continued on the bus as Jen showed us she could give herself a cramp in her foot. Although it looked painful, she tried to teach Allison how to do it. Coach Jay then topped it all off by showing that he can move his pinky toe at will, which grossed out most people. After the fun-filled dinner we got back to the hotel and called it a night.
