Pope, Lucas and Coombs Regionally Qualify

RALEIGH, N.C. - Julia Lucas won the 1,500m with a regional qualifying time of 4:27.54, Gavin Coombs was runner-up in the 3,000m steeplechase with a regionally qualifying time of 9:04.82 and Mitchell Pope regionally qualified in the hammer throw to lead the NC State outdoor track & field teams in the final day of the Wolfpack's home meet at Paul Derr Track, the Raleigh Relays.
Pope, who's regionally qualifying mark of 183-0 for fourth place in the hammer on Saturday was a career best, also regionally qualified in the shot put Friday. Lucas joined Angelina Blackmon, Magin Kebert and Jemissa Hess in the women's 4x1500m relay Friday, winning with a time of 18:06.88, breaking a 20-year-old school record.
Blackmon was the runner-up in the 800m with a time of 2:11.02. Tabitha Woodard cleared 11-3.75 in the pole vault to tie for eighth place.
Joya Rodgers ran a 12.27 in the 100m for 12th place and Reggie Reese placed eighth in the men's 100m with a time of 10.93. Reese ran the second leg of the men's 4x100m relay that finished second with a time of 41.73. Matt Minnick, T.J. Sheppard and Kevin Hutton made up the rest of the Pack's 4x1. Hutton and Reese joined Steve Gardner and Armand Quenum to place sixth in the 4x400m relay with a time of 3:16.41.
Tibor Vegh took third in the men's 1,500m with a time of 3:49.32 and Stephen Furst placed seventh with 3:51.27. John Henderson snagged sixth place in the 1,500m with a time of 4:00.56. John Crews regionally qualified in the 5,000m on Friday. Chris Crawford hit 170-1 in the hammer throw for fifth place.
Villanova's Ioana Parusheva broke a three-year-old meet record in the women's 3,000m steeplechase with a winning time of 10:15.31, qualifying for the NCAA Regional Championships. NC State returns to action next weekend when it travels to Charlotte, N.C. to compete in the Charlotte Invitational.
