Gymnastics Finishes Second at EAGL Championships

Piscataway, N.J. - The NC State gymnastics team finished in second place at the 11th annual EAGL Championships with a team score of 195.075 at Rutgers on Saturday night. The Wolfpack (23-8) notched its highest team scores of the season on both vault and bars, and in the process recorded its second-highest team score of the season. North Carolina won its third EAGL Championship with a 195.325. West Virginia (194.900) was third, New Hampshire fourth (194.450), Maryland was fifth (194.175), George Washington took sixth (193.775), Rutgers was seventh (191.425), and Pittsburgh was eighth (190.225). Sophomore Leigha Hancock became NC State's first vault champion at the EAGL Championships with her career-best 9.9.
After having to sit through a bye in the opening rotation, the Wolfpack came out and performed extremely well on vault with a team score of 49.175. NC State did not count a score below 9.8, and it marked the highest team score on vault this season and ties as the fourth highest in school history. Sophomore Leigha Hancock set a new personal-best with a 9.9 for and became the EAGL vault champion. A trio of Pack gymnasts scored a 9.825; senior Kylah Bachman, junior Rachel Katz and sophomore Heather Zolton. Junior Katie Ozburn rounded out the scoring with her 9.8.
After all teams completed one rotation, NC State held the overall team lead. North Carolina was second with a 39.050 on floor and West Virginia was third with a 48.875 also on floor.
NC State moved over to bars after its second bye, and notched a team score of 48.950, tying its top team score of the season. Junior Amanda Jones and freshman Elyse Adams each led the way for the Pack, as they both scored a 9.85 and tied for second place. Zolton finished with a 9.8 for eighth place, while both Bachman and Katz recorded a 9.725.
After each team went through two rotations, the Pack fell into second place with a score of 98.075, a close second to North Carolina's 98.150.
On beam, NC State would put together a team score of 48.625. Hancock was once again the top NC State performer, scoring a 9.875 and finishing in a tie for second place. Bachman was close behind with her 9.85 for fourth place. Jones scored a 9.7, while Zolton had a 9.675 and freshman Dru Davis completed the scoring with her 9.525.
The standings remained the same after three full events, with North Carolina leading with a 147.075 and NC State in second with a 146.725.
NC State finished the meet on floor, and scored a 48.325. For her third event, Hancock was the Pack's top finisher, as she had a 9.85 and finished in fourth. Zolton scored a 9.8, and Bachman added a 9.725.
After the meet was concluded it was announced NC State coach Mark Stevenson was the EAGL Coach of the Year. Steven has now been named the conference's coach of the year a total of two times.
