RALEIGH, N.C. - Aaron Bates' three RBIs led the way for NC State in a 12-7 victory over Boston College in an Atlantic Coast Conference game in which no lead ever seemed large enough. In addition to Bates, Matt Camp, Matt Mangini, and Jonathan Diaz all contributed two RBIs apiece. And despite the offensive production from the Wolfpack, the Eagles continued to rally and forced the Pack to use five pitchers to finally close the door.
NC State, which won for the fourth time in a row, improved to 17-4 overall and 2-0 in the ACC. Boston College dropped to 9-5 and 0-2. Freshman lefthander Eric Surkamp (2-0) started and struggled with his command, but held BC to four runs on five hits in five innings to earn the win. He walked two and struck out two. Eagles starter Nate Jeanes (1-1) allowed five runs, three of them earned, on four hits in two innings. He walked two and struck out none.
Boston College scored the first run of the game in the top of the second inning. Shawn McGill led off the inning with a double between Camp and Brian Aragon in right-center field. McGill took third on a sacrifice and scored on close play at the plate after Ryan Hutchinson's sacrifice fly to right field.
NC State responded with five runs in the bottom of the inning. Jon Still started the rally with a leadoff walk. Ryan Pond walked to put runners on first and second. Still and Pond both advanced one base on a passed ball. Caleb Mangum followed Pond to the plate and was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Mangini hit an infield single to drive in Still with the tying run, keeping the bases loaded. Diaz drove in two more Wolfpack runners with a double down the right-field line. Camp followed Diaz with a sacrifice fly that brought Mangini across the plate and moved Diaz to third. Ramon Corona drove in the final run of the inning with a sacrifice fly that scored Diaz.
The Eagles cut the Wolfpack lead to 5-3 in the top of the third. Ryne Reynoso led off and was hit by a pitch. Dave Preziosi singled to move Reynoso to second. The Wolfpack faced a jam with the bases loaded and only one out after Jared McGuire was hit by a pitch. Reynoso came in to score when Surkamp walked Eric Campbell with the bases loaded. Preziosi scored the second run of the inning when Aragon dropped a fly ball in right field to allow Shawn McGill to reach first.
Following a scoreless top of the fourth, NC State added a run in the bottom of the the inning to extend its lead to three runs. Camp led off with a double off the right-field wall that just missed leaving the park. Bates hit a one-out single to move Camp to third. Aragon hit into a fielder's choice that brought Camp home.
Boston College plated another run in the fifth inning to cut the NC State lead to 6-4. McGuire hit a two-out double and the scored on Campbell's RBI single. McGuire avoided the tag at the plate by leaping and tumbling over Mangum, the second time on the day that Boston College scored on a close and controversial play at the plate.
The Wolfpack brought home four runners to open up a six-run lead in the bottom of the fifth. Pond started the inning by reaching base on a Boston College error. Mangum grounded out to advance Pond to second base. Mangini followed Mangum with an RBI single that drove in Pond. Mangini reached second on a Diaz infield hit. Camp moved Mangini and Diaz up one base with a sacrifice bunt. Corona walked to load the bases. Bates cleared the bases with a double off the left-field wall to give the NC State a 10-4 lead.
The Eagles cut the Wolfpack's lead in half in the top of the sixth. Jett Ruiz hit a single to start the Boston College rally. Hutchinson followed Ruiz with a single to put runners on first and second. Ruiz and Hutchinson both scored on a Mangini throwing error. Johnny Ayers, who reached base and went all the way to second on Mangini's error, scored when Preziosi singled.
NC State expanded its lead to 11-7 in the bottom of the sixth. Still walked to lead off the inning. Back-to-back singles from Mangum and Mangini loaded the bases. Camp picked up his second RBI of the game when he was walked to drive in Still.
After a scoreless seventh inning, the Wolfpack put one more run on the board in the bottom of the eighth inning. Marcus Jones hit a leadoff pinch-hit triple and scored on Mangum's single to put NC State up 12-7.
