RALEIGH, N.C. - Caleb Mangum belted a two-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift NC State to an 11-9 victory over Boston College and a sweep of the three-game Atlantic Coast Conference series against the Golden Eagles.
The win gives the Wolfpack a record of 18-4 overall and 3-0 in the ACC and its first conference sweep since May of 2002 against Virginia. The Eagles fall to 9-6 on season and 0-3 in the ACC with the loss.
Sam Walls (1-0) pitched three innings of relief, giving up only one hit and no runs, while walking two and striking out one to earn his first win of the season. Kevin Boggan(1-1) pitched 2 1/3 innings of relief, giving up five runs, four earned, on five hits and four strikeouts in the losing effort.
Due in part to shaky Wolfpack defense, Boston College jumped out to a 3-0 first-inning lead. With one out, Ryan Hutchinson walked and stole second base. Jared McGuire followed Hutchinson to the plate and walked. On the ball-four pitch to McGuire, Hutchinson stole third and scored when Mangum's throw to third was off the mark. McGuire advanced to second on Dave Preziosi's single and moved to third on Eric Campbell's fielder's choice. McGuire scored on an infield single by Shawn McGill. Preziosi took third on the play and scored when no one covered for Mangum's throw to second to catch a stealing Shawn McGill.
NC State was held scoreless in the bottom of the first, but tied the score at 3-3 in the bottom of the second. Jon Still hit a leadoff single for the Wolfpack. Ryan Pond followed Still with a two-run home run inside the left-field foul pole. Matt Mangini kept the rally going with a single. Magnum used a sacrifice bunt to move Mangini to second. Matt Camp stepped to the plate and belted a double down the left-field line to drive in Mangini. The inning ended when Camp tried to score on a throwing error and was put out at the plate.
The Wolfpack took a 5-3 lead in the third. Bates hit a single to start off the inning. Brian Aragon was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Pond followed with a single to load the bases. Mangini hit a two-RBI single that plated Bates and Aragon.
After a scoreless fourth inning, Boston College jumped back on top with a three-run fifth. Jett Ruiz led off with a single. Following the first out of the inning, Johnny Ayers singled to put runners at the corners for the Eagles. Hutchinson stepped to the plate after Ayers and picked up an RBI by reaching first on a fielder's choice. McGuire's single gave Boston College runners at first and second, and Preziosi's double drove in two more runs for the Eagles, making the score 6-5.
The sixth inning was scoreless. However, in the seventh Jason Ducan, who came on in the fifth in relief of Wolfpack starter Gib Hobson, pitched himself into a jam. After giving up a single to Ayers, walking Hutchinson and hitting McGuire, Duncan was lifted from the game in favor of Sam Walls, who walked home a runner. Walls got NC State out of the inning, but not before the Eagles added two more runs to make the score 9-5.
The Wolfpack cut the BC lead to 9-6 in the bottom of the seventh. Aragon hit a single and reached second when Jeremy Synan hit into a fielder's choice. An errant pickoff attempt by Boston College catcher Jett Ruiz allowed Aragon to score from second base.
A three-run eighth inning for NC State tied the game 9-9. The Wolfpack used small ball and a pair of Boston College errors to aid the rally. Magnum nd Jonathan Diaz led off the inning with singles, and Camp reached base safely on fielder's choices to load the bases. Ramon Corona followed Camp by hitting into a fielder's choice. Camp was retired at second on the play, but Mangum scored from third and Diaz scored from second on a throwing error. After Bates struck outfor the second out, Aragon hit a single to move Corona to third. When Ruiz allowed a passed ball, Corona came across the plate for the tying run.
Walls set the Boston College batters down in order for the second inning in a row in the top of the ninth, setting up Mangum's heroics in the bottom half of the inning. Pond started the inning with a base hit, his fourth of the game, and went to second on Mangini's groundout. Magnum followed with a two-run homer that bounced off the top the left-field wall before leaving the park to give the NC State a 11-9 win.
The Wolfpack returns to action Wednesday, March 15, at 4 p.m. against UNC Greensboro at Doak Field.
