RALEIGH, N.C. - Matt Mangini continued to terrorize Delaware State pitching Sunday, bashing out four more hits and driving in three runs to lead NC State to a 17-0 rout in the final game of a three-game series at Doak Field.
Mangini, who had just five hits all season a year ago, had 11 hits in the three-game series, which the Wolfpack swept. NC State won the first two games by scores of 21-3 and 12-2, outscoring the Hornets 50-5. The series marked the start of the 2006 season for both teams.
Jason Duncan (1-0) started in a prearranged pitching split for the Wolfpack, allowing him to get the victory despite working only four innings. He allowed no runs on just two hits, walked one and struck out three. Wolfpack pitching combined ...
Delaware State starter Billy Keyes (0-1) did not get out of the second inning. He was tagged for 11 runs, seven of them earned, on seven hits in 1 2/3 innings. He walked three, struck out one and labored through 65 pitches, three of which were errant breaking pitches that hit NC State batters.
In addition to Mangini, who was 4-for-5 and is 11-for-13 for the season, Aaron Cone (2-for-3 with three RBIs), Brian Aragon (2-for-2 with an RBI), and Jonathan Diaz (2-for-2 with a home run and two RBIs) had two hits apiece for the Wolfpack. Brandon Hostetter went 2-for-4 for Delaware State.
Keyes ran into trouble right from the get-go, plunking Ramon Corona and Aaron Bates with one out and allowing a bunt single to Aragon to load the bases. Jon Still cashed in the opportunity with a two-run single to left, and Matt Mangini rolled an RBI single through the right side of the infield for a 3-0 lead after an inning.
The second was the big inning for NC State, which scored a season-high eight runs in the frame. Keyes began the inning by hitting Diaz and walking Matt Camp. Corona followed with an RBI-double down the left-field line to score Diaz and send Camp to third. Bates received an intentional walk and Aragon blooped an RBI-single to left to score Camp, and Still hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Corona and move Bates to third. Aragon stole second with Pond at the plate, and when Randy Boyer's throw went into center field, Bates scored and Aragon went to third. Hostetter then dropped Pond's fly ball in right field for an error that went for a sacrifice fly with Aragon scoring on the play and Pond reaching second base. Mangini doubled to the wall in center field to drive in Pond with the sixth run of the inning and the ninth of the game, and Diaz belted a two-run homer to make it 11-0.
Reliever Josh Schmidt came in for Keyes and got out of the second on just one pitch, but a one-out single to pinch-hitter Jeremy Synan in the bottom of the third turned into another run when Synan went to second on a wild pitch and scored on Pond's double down the line in left.
Marcus Jones led off the bottom of the fourth, reached on an error and took second on a wild pitch. Diaz singled to right to put runners on the corners, and Bobby Hubbard, pinch-hitting for Camp, singled to right to drive in Jones and move pinch-runner Drew Martin to second. Aaron Cone pinch-hit for Bates and drove in Martin with a grounder to second to make it 14-0 after four innings.
The Wolfpack continued the onslaught in the bottom of the fifth. Chris Engle led off with a pinch-single to right field, took second on a wild pitch and scored on Mangini's RBI-single up the middle.
Martin led off the bottom of the eighth with a single to left, stole second and came around to score on Cone's opposite-field home run to left, making the final score 17-0.
The Wolfpack will return to action next weekend with a three-game series with Hofstra. Game times will be 3 p.m. on Friday, 2 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday.
