RALEIGH, N.C. - In his first college start, freshman Jeremy Synan had three hits and drove in five runs, and Ramon Corona went 4-for-6 as NC State pounded out 23 hits and hammered Hofstra 19-6 in the first game of a three-game series at Doak Field.
The Wolfpack, which has scored 69 runs and gotten 70 hits in its first four games of the season, improved to 4-0 with the victory. The game was the season opener for the Pride. Gib Hobson (2-0) worked five innings to pick up his second win of the season. Hobson allowed two runs on four hits, walking two and striking out five. Ryan Dunn (0-1) had a rough debut to his season, allowing 10 runs, six earned, on 10 hits in three-plus innings of work. He walked one and did not record a strikeout.
In addition to Synan and Corona, the Wolfpack had productive games from numerous players. Matt Mangini, who went 2-for-2 and drove in two runs. Mangini is now 13-for-15 with nine RBIs for the season. Jonathan Diaz went 4-for-6 and had two RBIs. Marcus Jones came off the bench and went 2-for-2 with two RBIs. Caleb Mangum had two hits in three at-bats and drove in two runs. Mike Walsh went 2-for-3 for Hofstra. David Cole had two hits and an RBI. Josh Stern homered in four at-bats.
Hofstra drew first blood with a run in the top of the second inning. Walsh led off with an infield single and went to second on Matt Kougasian's bouncer back to Hobson. Hobson struck out Patrick Rogers, but Cole lined a single past third base to drive in Walsh and give the Pride a 1-0 lead, the first time in 2006 that the Wolfpack trailed in a game.
The Wolfpack did not trail for long. Ryan Pond reached on a one-out error by Walsh at first base and Mangini was safe on an infield single. Synan drove a ball deep into the gap in right-center field to drive in both runners and give the Pack a 2-1 lead. Mangum followed with a double down the left-field line to drive in Synan. Diaz reached on an infield single, and Mangum was out at the plate on Camp's unsuccessful squeeze bunt. Camp and Diaz pulled a double-steal to put runners on second and third, and Corona's two-out, two-run single to right field scored both runners to give the Pack a 5-1 lead.
Hofstra came back with a two-out run in the top of the third. Andrew Campana singled to left and stole second, and Ricky Caputo walked. Walsh reached on an infield single, and Campana came around to score when Mangini's throw to first bounced away from Aaron Bates at first base for an error.
Bates led off the bottom of the third and popped up to second base, but Campana dropped the ball for a two-base error. Brian Aragon walked, and Pond's single to left loaded the bases. Mangini drilled a two-run single past first base to score Bates and Aragon, and Synan hit an opposite-field single through the left side of the infield to score Pond and push the NC State lead to six runs at 8-2.
Camp led off the bottom of the fourth with a single to left and went to third on Corona's single down the left-field line. Dunn hit Bates with a pitch to load the bases, and that was the end of the day for Dunn. Anthony Samo came in for Hofstra and walked Aragon to force in a run. Pond hit a fly ball to right that Rogers dropped, but recovered in time to nail Aragon at second base for a forceout. Corona scored on the play to give NC State a 10-2 lead.
The Pride got back on the board in the top of the sixth against freshman lefthander Andrew Taylor. Cole singled with one down and stole second. Steve Oliveri drove in Cole with a two-run double into the left-field corner, and Stern homered to left to cut the lead in half at 10-5.
NC State made it 11-5 with a run in the bottom half of the inning. Jones beat out an infield single, went to second on a groundout, took third on a wild pitch and scored on Diaz's single up the middle.
Aragon got the Wolfpack started in the seventh with a one-out walk, then stole second. Pond walked and Jones singled to left to score Aragon and make it 12-5. Jones and Pond moved up to second and third on the throw home, and Pond scored when Caputo's throw from third to first on Mangum's grounder was short for an error. Diaz, up next, reached on an infield single to score Jones and give NC State a 14-5 lead.
Corona led off the bottom of the eighth with a single to center field off reliever Mike Xydias, and Bates rolled a single through the right side of the infield. Pinch-hitter Matt Payne walked to load the bases, and Jones walked with one out to force in Corona and make it a 10-run game at 15-5. Synan delivered a two-run single to center to drive in Bates and Payne, with Jones going all the way to third on the play. Jon Still pinch-hit for Mangum and lofted a fly ball into shallow right that fell in for a single, scoring Jones. Synan scored on a wild pitch make it 19-5.
Hofstra added one last run in the top of the ninth. With two down pinch-hitter Chris Menstrasti singled to center, and Tony Schmitt walked. Kougasian grounded to second, but Drew Martin booted the ball for an error, allowing Menstrasti to score from second and make the final score 19-6.
