RALEIGH, N.C. - Eryk McConnell was masterful for the second start in a row, and Caleb Mangum doubled twice and drove in three runs Saturday night as NC State defeated Hofstra 13-2 at Doak Field. The Wolfpack, which won the first game of the series by a 19-6 score on Friday, improved to 5-0 for the season. Hofstra fell to 0-2.
McConnell (2-0), who threw six perfect innings a week earlier against Delaware State, was not perfect but was quite effective, working six shutout innings to get his second win in as many starts. McConnell allowed three hits, walked one and struck out five. He allowed just one Hofstra baserunner to advance past first base. Pride starter Charlie Frago (0-1), the first of six Hofstra pitchers, was yanked after three-plus innings. He allowed six runs, four of them earned, on five hits. He walked three and struck out two.
Mangum and Matt Mangini both went 3-for-4 to lead all hitters. Aaron Bates went 2-for-3 and drove in a run. Anthony Sarno had two hits in as many at-bats for Hofstra.
Matt Camp got the Wolfpack rolling with a leadoff walk in the bottom of the first inning. Ramon Corona laid down a sacrifice bunt, and Bates delivered the game's first run with an RBI single to center field. Jon Still walked to put runners on first and second, and Bates went to third on Ryan Pond's fly ball to deep right field. Still stole second and catcher Steve Oliveri threw the ball into center field for an error that allowed Bates to score the second run of the inning.
The Wolfpack pieced together a two-out rally in the bottom of the third. Bates got it started with a booming double to the wall in center field. Still walked, and Pond doubled into the gap in left-center, driving in both runners to make it 4-0.
NC State made it 6-0 in the bottom of the fourth. Mangini led off the bottom of the fourth with a double to right-center and scored on Mangum's double into the left-field corner. Mangum went to third when David Cole threw back to the infield to an uncovered second base and scored on Jonathan Diaz's sacrifice fly to center field.
Still led off the bottom of the fifth with a single to right, and Brian Aragon and Mangingi drew one-out walks to load the bases. Mangum singled to left to drive in Still, and Diaz bounced into a force play to score Aragon. Grego Polius came in to pitch for the Pride, and Camp greeted him with an RBI single up the middle to score Mangini and give the Pack a 9-0 lead.
Still belted a one-out double to left field in the bottom of the sixth, went to third on Marcus Jones's fly ball to center. Matt Payne walked, and Still scored when ball four got past the catcher for a wild pitch. Rob DiFalco came in to pitch for Hofstra and promptly gave up a single to left field to Mangini. Mangum's second double of the game sent Payne home to push the lead to 11-0.
Reliever Daniel Lux came in for Hofstra with two outs in the bottom of the seventh and served up a solo homer to Aaron Cone on his second pitch of the game, making it 12-0.
Mangini led off the bottom of the eighth with a triple that short-hopped the wall in left-center and scored on pinch-hitter Bobby Hubbard's sacrifice fly to center field to give NC State a 13-0 lead.
Hofstra finally got on the board in the top of the ninth. Nick Panzarella and Ricky Caputo led off with singles to left field, and went to second and third on a wild pitch from reliever Joel Brookens. Matt Kougasian walked to load the bases with none out. Panzarella and Caputo scored on groundouts
Notes: NC State has scored 82 runs on 83 hits in five games this season ... Mangini has two or more hits in all five games this season and is 16-for-19 ... Mangum left the game after his left ankle got caught in the stadium turf surrounding the home-plate area ... It is believed that Mangum only suffered a sprain.
