Hess, Foster, Adams Provisionally Qualify At New Balance Collegiate Invitational

NEW YORK - Jemissa Hess, Dexter Adams and Ebony Foster of the NC State indoor track & field teams all met NCAA Championship provisional qualiying marks Feb. 3-4 at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational in the historic New York Amory.
Hess was the runner-up in the 3,000m with a 9:16.05, the second-fastest time in the ACC this season, the ninth-fastest time in school history and missing the NCAA Championship automatic qualifying mark by .05 seconds. Foster provisionally qualified, again, in the 60m hurdles with a 8.32 in the prelims before taking fifth place in the finals with a time of 8.36. Adams placed fourth in the long jump Friday with a provisional mark of 24-8.5, a career-best, and then competed in the 60m dash the next morning at the Carolina Invitational in North Carolina's Smith Fieldhouse in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Also in New York, Tibor Vegh was the runner-up in the 3,000m with the ACC's fastest time of the season, 8:12.74 and Chris Kollar ran the fastest mile of the season in the ACC with a 4:07.71, the 10th-fastest time in school history, for 11th place. John Crews placed fifth in the 3,000m with a 8:17.20.
Meanwhile at the Carolina Invitational on Saturday, Cassandra Williams took seventh place in the 200m with a career best time of 25.69. Michele Popple and Georgia Davis finished fifth and sixth in the mile with respective career best times of 5:03.84 and 5:04.34, while Jennifer Boyd came in ninth place at 5:08.76. Danielle Boucher ran a 2:20.53 in the 800m for 10th place. Lee Ann Wheatley placed third in the 5,000m with a time of 17:47.39.
Laila Thomas set new career highs in both the high jump and the long jump, clearing 5-6 to tie for third place in the high jump and reaching 18-1 in the long jump to place 10th. Mattie Bethea tied for sixth place in the high jump at 5-4.25. Shanelle Cross finished sixth in the long jump with a mark of 17-6.
Tabitha Woodard cleared 11-3.75 in the pole vault to tie for third place. In the weight throw, Brie Ward came in fourth place with a career best mark of 53-0.
On the men's side Reggie Reese ran a 6.95 in the 60m and took seventh place. Kevin Hutton and Steve Gardner finished fifth and sixth in the 400m with respective times of 49.69 and 50.05. Bryce Ruiz won the 3,000m with a time of 8:34.10. Jamar Dawson finished ninth in the triple jump with a mark of 44-3.5.
Mitchell Pope, who placed sixth in the shot put Friday in New York with a mark of 56-9.5, won both the shot put and the weight throw the next day in Chapel Hill, hitting 57-8.25 in the shot and 56-11 in the weight. Chris Crawford was the runner-up in both events, reaching 52-10.75 in the shot put and 56-3 in the weight throw. Kent Dickens tossed a 44-0 to finish eighth in the weight throw.
