Pope Hits Provisional Mark Again

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Ebony Foster won the 60m hurdles with a NCAA Championship provisional qualifying time of 8.20, the fastest in the ACC this season and breaking her own school record, set two years ago. Mitchell Pope hit the provisional mark in the shot put for the fifth time this season, with a third place heave of 60-11.25 for the NC State indoor track & field team at the Virginia Tech Challenge Feb. 17-18 in Rector Field House.
Joya Rodgers won the 60m dash and Foster took second. Rodgers' time of 7.51 in the semi-finals, which ties for fourth fastest in the ACC this season and second best in school history.
Angelina Blackmon finished third in the mile with a time of 4:57.58, Michele Popple placed fifth at 5:03.61 and Georgia Davis came in ninth place at 5:09.44. Blackmon was the runner-up in the 1,000m with a time of 2:53.42, Davis took sixth at 2:57.15, Popple ran a 2:59.43 in the 1,000m for ninth place and Jennifer Boyd came in 10th at 2:59.86.
Jemissa Hess won the 1,000m with a time of 2:50.50 and took third place in the 800m with a time of 2:11.17, the third fastest time in the ACC this season and third best in school history.
Lee Ann Wheatley finished fifth in the 3,000m with a time of 10:06.91 and Jennifer Webster snagged fourth place in the 60m hurdles at 8.83.
Mattie Bethea cleared 5-5 in the high jump, tying for fifth place, while Christie Black, Webster and Laila Thomas tied for eighth at 5-3. Tabitha Woodard tied for sixth place in the pole vault with a mark of 11-4.25. Shanelle Cross took seventh place in the long jump at 18-6.5 and Brie Ward finished ninth in the weight throw with a toss of 49-1.5.
Chris Kollar ran a 8:11.86 for second place in the men's 3,000m, the second fastest time in the ACC this season. Tibor Vegh ran a 2:30.67 for fifth place in the 1,000m, w54-8hile Gavin Coombs came in sixth at 2:31.01 and Bryce Ruiz finished 10th with a 2:31.84. Ruiz also took 10th place in the 3,000m with a time of 8:32.01.
Steve Gardner finished eighth in the 400m with a time of 49.10, just ahead of Kevin Hutton's 49.24 for ninth place.
Dexter Adams reached 23-8 in the long jump, good for fourth place. Chris Crawford hit career bests in both the shot put and the weight throw, finishing seventh in the shot put with a mark of 54-8, the seventh best in the ACC this season, and taking ninth in the weight throw with a mark of 58-6.75, which ranks eighth in the ACC this season. Pope placed 10th in the weight throw with a mark of 57-0.
NC State returns to action next weekend when the Wolfpack returns to Blacksburg for the ACC Indoor Track & Field Championships Feb. 23-25.
