CHARLESTON, S.C. - Matt Mangini continued his assault on the magic .800 barrier Saturday, homering twice and driving in four runs to lead 19th-ranked NC State to a 12-5 triumph over Richmond at Riley Park.
Jon Still had two doubles, two singles and four RBIs, and Aaron Bates and Brian Aragon both went deep to lead the Wolfpack, which improved to 7-1 for the season. Richmond lost for the second time in as many games.
Jason Duncan (3-0), the first of five NC State pitchers, picked up the win, working five innings and allowing three runs on five hits. He walked two and struck out six. Jason Bolinsky (0-1) took the loss after allowing five runs, all earned, on four hits in four innings of work. He walked four and struck out one.
Jonathan Diaz got the ball rolling for the Wolfpack by leading off the top of the first inning with a walk. Jeremy Synan grounded into a force play, erasing Diaz at second base, and Bates walked to put runners on first and second with one out. Aragon flied to right for the second out, but Still drove a double into the gap in right-center to drive in both runners and give NC State a 2-0 lead.
Richmond got one run back in the bottom half of the inning. Ben Zeskind smoked a one-out triple all the way to the wall in straightaway center field and scored on Joe Mahoney's grounder to shortstop.
Aragon drew a one-out walk in the top of the third and scored from first on Still's second double in as many at-bats. Mangini followed with his second homer in as many days, a two-run blast to right, increasing the NC State lead to 5-1.
Eric Duclos took over the pitching chores for Richmond in the top of the fifth, and Bates belted Duclos's first pitch of the season to right for an opposite-field solo homer.
Duncan finally ran out of gas in the bottom of the sixth. Mahoney led off with a single to center and Matt McKenna walked. Adam McLaurin came in for the Wolfpack, and Alex Hale bunted the runners to second and third. Andrew Justice singled to left to drive in two runs, and Cameron Brown doubled off the top of the wall in left-center to score Justice all the way from first base. Brown took third on the throw home and scored on Victor Croglio's grounder to slice the lead to a run at 6-5.
Aragon got one run back with a towering leadoff homer to right. Still blooped a single to right field and Mangini followed with his second two-run homer of the game to put the lead back to four runs at 9-5.
NC State pushed the lead to 11-5 with two more runs in the top of the eighth. Synan and Bates led off with walks and pulled a double steal. Aragon drove in Synan with a groundout and Still singled up the middle to drive in Bates.
Ramon Corona led off the top of the ninth with a triple to deep center field and scored on Chris Engle's sacrifice fly to right field.
