CHARLESTON, S.C. * Brian Aragon went 3-for-5 with a home run two RBIs, and four NC State pitchers combined on a six-hitter Sunday as the 19th-ranked Wolfpack defeated The Citadel 6-2 in the Homewood Suites Shootout at Riley Park.
NC State took two of three games in the Shootout to improve to 8-1 for the season. The Citadel dropped to 2-2 with the loss. Junior righthander Gib Hobson (3-0) picked up the victory for the Wolfpack. Hobson went five innings and allowed two runs, both earned, on five hits. He walked one and struck out four. Citadel starter Ken Egleton (0-1) took the loss after allowing four runs on six hits in four innings. He walked two and struck out five.
In addition to Aragon, Matt Camp had a multihit game for NC State, going 2-for-4 and scoring twice. Chris Swauger went 2-for-4 with an RBI for The Citadel.
Jonathan Diaz opened the game by drawing a walk and went to second on Camp's sacrifice bunt. Aaron Bates drove Diaz in with the first run of the ballgame with a towering double to the wall in center field.
Matt Mangini led off the top of the second with a single up the middle, but was out at home plate trying to score on Ramon Corona's double to right field. Corona went to third on the throw to the plate and scored on Caleb Mangum's sacrifice fly. The Citadel cut the lead to 2-1 on Zach Brown's leadoff homer in the bottom of the second.
The Pack got that run back plus one in the top of the third when Camp reached on a one-out infield single and Aragon blasted a deep home run to right, his third of the season, extending the NC State lead to 4-1.
Tripp Cappelmann led off the bottom of the third for the Bulldogs and reached on an infield single. He went to second on Matt Covington's groundout and scored on Chris Swauger's single to left. That cut the Wolfpack lead in half at 4-2.
Camp singled up the middle to start the top of the fifth and took second on a passed ball. Bates walked and Aragon's sacrifice attempt wound up in no man's land up the third-base line for an infield single that loaded the bases with none out. The Pack got one run in on Jon Still's double-play grounder to make it 5-2, but that was the only run of the inning.
Both teams went silent after that until the Wolfpack stirred back to life in the top of the eighth. Corona led off with a walk and went to second on Mangum's sacrifice bunt. Pinch-hitter Aaron Cone drew a walk and Corona stole third on ball four. Marcus Jones pinch-ran for Cone, and Diaz laid down a squeeze bunt to drive in Corona with NC State's sixth run of the game, which gave the Pack a four-run lead at 6-2.
NC State will be back in action on Tuesday against North Carolina A&T at Doak Field. Game time will be at 3 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on WKNC-FM and on gopack.com through Yahoo's subscription service.
