NC State (2-3) finished the Tiger Invitational off in style, collecting four runs in the first inning for a 4-1 win over Minnesota (0-4). Abbie Sims (2-1) had double digit strikeouts for the second time in her three starts this season, and Tess Corona had the third multi-hit game of her career for the Wolfpack. Briana Hassett (0-2) took the loss for the Gophers.
The offense scored four times on four hits in the first after scoring just four runs in the first four games of the season. Shanna Smith singled with one out to get things started, and Sims and Chamberlin reached to load the bases. Miranda Ervin, who along with Sims won all-tournament honors, singled through the right side to drive in a pair of runs with Chamberlin advancing to third. Corona followed with a single for her second RBI of the season for a 3-0 Wolfpack lead. Beth Poore came in to run for Ervin, and Megan Dalthorp roped a double off the left field wall to score Poore. It was Dalthorp's first career double and RBI.
With a comfortable four run cushion, Sims went to work. She allowed just one unearned run, five hits and didn't surrender a walk. The 11 strikeouts marked the 28th time in 43 starts she has topped double digits.
